Rocky:  2342 WC

As a plumber running a brisk business dealing with local authority work I have over the years hired other plumbers and seen them come and go but one stands out in a rather amusing way. Rocky, that’s what I will call him was a wrestler and used to come up every so often when they had it on television regularly on a Saturday some time back.

I spoke to the local labour exchange and in no time there was Rocky with the labour exchange card in his hand that formally introduces him as a plumber prospect for that job. I recognised him at a glance.  Not sure if plumbers need to do that these days but in the early 70’s jobs could be hard to find and there were lots of good men out there looking for work. Any way did I say I was surprised at seeing him, well in more ways than one. For a start what did a television star want with a £20pw job and what was I seeing. Rocky was fierce and aggressive and big, that was the illusion of television because this man was small and charming to say the least.

He said I’m Rocky Hargrove, “yes I know” I said and asked him what he wanted with a pluming job? And explained that he had damaged his back and was advised that he should take it easier or he would damage him self beyond repair. So there he was and after a successful interview was given the job.

Rocky had a wife and four children and lived in Kent some thirty miles from the office from where he would be working from and wondered if he could not find a more local job any way, though I was pleased to see him come on board. His answer was disparaging for at that time jobs were few and far between and my offer of a job was the first in over a month but there was a reason for that as you will see. I was to find out he did not exactly complete his apprenticeship as a plumber and called him self half a plumber and did I mind. The answer was yes but I did like his tenacity for passing him self off as a qualified plumber at the job centre and gave him trial period to see how he got on with the work. Besides he was unusual, he was in my eyes at least a man that felt that he had the skills to call him self a plumber and put him self on the line with me looking over his shoulder like a hawk till I felt safe he could do the work he was asked to do. Besides he had four children and a wife to keep, though I understood she was a dinner lady in their local school bringing in the only wage at the time.

Surprisingly he was modest as by to days standards he was good at his job except for one or two things that he did not have any training on such as lead burning, which is welding lead sheet or dressing lead which we did not do much of any way so he melded in the activities of the firm and was an excellent worker and was fairly close to me one way or another.

Not sure why but Rocky could be aggressive at times and there were a few times when things went wrong he would glare at me if I should try to correct a mistake, as this was in his mind a challenge to his prowess as a plumber and as a man. Now remember he was short in stature, which probably accounted for much of his actions mind you and had the audacity to call him self a plumber and sit in for an interview and charm himself in to a job that no one wanted to give him. He had confidence in bundles and a tenacity that I spoken of and in my mind he was also a brave man. But he never ever liked to be put right on any thing and had him  more than once come close to him offering me a knuckle sandwich in a confrontation.

So I was to learn to be “respectful”, that was his word. He wanted every one to respect him or else he could get eye ball to eye ball with you even if it meant him standing on a chair. He was very athletic and would literally jump on to a desk and point down to you and make his point gesticulating as he would I the ring. At times it could be difficult but interesting. He was entertainment on two legs and not only that he was a happy man so it was easy to see when he was about to blow up as the smile would go and we would say “Now what Rocky” I’m not sure but he had resigned at least six times to then come back within an hour or next morning and apologise profusely and say his anger gets the better of him and he could not help himself at times and it would not happen again. Thankfully he never actually punched or hurt any one. It was all bravado and he could be forgiven.

As I have said he was close to me, though it was my nature to keep myself a little aloof from my employees and whilst Rock was some fifteen to twenty years my senior he did ask for my advice on certain matters and was always happy to help out if I could.

One morning July 1970 something the doorbell rang to my home at 6:30am, bleary eyed I scrambled to the door to find Rocky with a miserable face that told me something had happened. “Sorry I will come back later” and he turned to go away. Come on what’s up, and do come in. First things first put the kettle on for a cup of tea. So we went in to the kitchen where he sat looking as if he had the burden of the world on his shoulders.

With a cup of tea in front of us both and not a word said by him on entering the house I sat waiting for him to start. We must have gone through the hot tea sipping process to the more enjoyable drinking a more cooled cup of tea to a point where both had drank more than half a cup but not a word. What ever it was painful and I could see tears welling up in his eyes and I tried to avert my gaze so that he would not think that I thought his tears made him in my eyes a weak person.

After a few false starts he began to say something like, “ You have been a good friend and a good employer and you have helped me out in one or two matters, but I’m not sure what you can do about this one” Hesitantly he assured that his family were fine and that he wasn’t in money trouble. “Ok Rocky so what’s is the real problem”?

He slowly said that when he went home from work last night he entered the house and went in to the kitchen from the back of the house where he parked the van. June his wife had a few friends over who were on their way out for a girls night  and hoped to persuade June to change her mind and come with them having previously reluctantly turned it down and they were chatting away so he felt he should make a coffee and take it up to the bath room for his usual shower after work.

To his horror what he learnt had shook him down to his foundations.

1. Apparently one of the women said that her husband called her his Colt 45 and the girls giggled when she explained that he could trigger her off six times every time. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. There was more laughter when another said I’m lucky to have an organism once a week as her husband was totally selfish and cared only about him self besides the new bloke at work filled in and made up for it which added to the laughter. Then one turned to June and said she would bet that Rocky would bang away all night and how many times does she organism. Quietly she said to be honest he lasts one to two minutes if she is lucky and that she has never had an orgasm with Rocky. There was silence in disbelief, one asks, as Rocky is short was he short in any other areas. No she says “he is all male there but he      cannot satisfy me, never has.” Shocked by what he had heard he let himself out of the house to drove the streets in the van where he had a few hours sleep in a lay bye to be woken by a policeman to be asked if he was alright, then there he was at 6:30 am on my door step wanting answers to the big question which he had no way of believing could be of help to him. He was who he was and what could any one say or do to help him out of this hole.

“Dam it she is beautiful and I just cant help my self” he said. We talked and I suggested why not look away and think of nasty things and train your self to last longer. He said he had tried all that and it did help.

Now having gone through the same thing as a young man when thankfully a date explained things that are not always explained to a young man who thinks a leg over takes one or two minutes and the girl is always thankful for the service. It is a bit of a comeuppance when your told your useless in that department. So being the inventive sort did something about it and it worked. Luckily Rocky had someone in front of him that could help.

Caution: For health and safety reasons don’t try this at home, no knowing who will sue me otherwise and on what pretext. So don’t do this without doctors advice. In the 70’s we could and did.

“Well Rocky” I said “I might actually be able to help you but you must take care” and explained that there was a wasp sting cream that was in effect an anaesthetic that would render your affected part numb, explained that it might never the less take one or two goes to get used to it. So sent him off to the chemist and home for a good sleep.

But unexpectedly another 6:30 ring on the door bell and he was there with tears streaming down his face this time saying he had really mucked his life up. So in trepidation I asked what has happened now, I enquired if he has successfully used my advice to which he said that at first it did not work but after the second time he managed to go for a very long time and bang, bang, bang every time. “So what’s’ the problem I asked” He said “you told me to be careful but you didn’t tell me what you meant” he said, yes I remember, “just don’t over do it that’s all”. 

It turned out that once he got in to the swing of it he had sex first thing in the morning and immediately on getting home from work and again during the evening then long sessions at night and weekends were a double Colt. Clearly June suddenly had a husband that could give her an orgasm one after another and she cried out for more and he gave more until one day the poor little lady could not cope she needed a rest besides the battering her bits got, were worse for wear On that morning after a marathon night he turns her over to start again at 5am in the morning and it was “wow boy” she then asked what has brought all this on, after all these years of marriage and four children she was being banged up like sex was going to be outlawed next week.

He admitted he had inadvertently over heard what she had told her girl friends and how ashamed he felt by what was said. She said confiding in a close friend who no doubt told every one else that she was so pleased with how Rocky had all of a sudden became the great lover she had never had before that she was not complaining. But later suggested that bits of her needed a rest for obvious reasons and what could she do. Her friends probably didn’t fully understand what was actually happening and said enjoy it and that she was lucky.

But the day comes when enough is enough and this was the day. So she asks “what did you do to make you Superman. Out comes his tube of wasp sting cream and he explains all. “you dirty little bastard bug off and leave me alone” was the remark that had him quickly put on his clothes and leave the house.

8 am on the dot a phone call came from June where she thanked me for the advice given to Rocky as it had made a huge difference to their marriage but would I advise that a little restraint was necessary and would I ask Rocky to ring her immediately, with that she went.

Within less than a month he left the firm to find a more local job, with a suitable reference at hand he had no problems.
