Some common questions about electric model trains answered |

January 21st, 2010

Author: Philip Redfearn

The most common question about electric model trains relates to the scale. This is sometimes called the gauge of the train and relates to the ratio used to measure the size, against the real train that has been modeled. This article will answer some of the common questions relating to scale and gauge for electric trains.

When you decide to buy electric model trains then you first need to consider the scale that you are going to buy and use. This is important as you cannot mix different scales together. You need to ensure that the trains and the track are the same scale. As such, it is important to understand the scales and then to measure the size of the room you are going to be using. This is best way to ensure that you buy the right scale.

This determines the size of the track that you can create, the number of accessories that you can fit into the space and also the scale that would be best suited to you. If you don’t have much space then you need to buy a scale such as the N scale. This is one of the smaller scales that you can find. It is small but still very intricate and detailed. Some of the most passionate hobbyists actually choose this scale as it offers the most realistic trains and prototypes.

The N scale is very practical and easy to construct. This is something that many people ask about. The ease of construction should be a big factor if you are a beginner. You need to give yourself time to adjust to the skill level needed to create large, complex track layouts. Some scales are easier to manage than others, and the N scale is one of the best in this regard.

One of the most popular scales is called the HO scale. This means it is half of the O scale, which used to be most commonly used in the hobby. The HO scale is the most commonly used in America and used by many people around the world. This scale has a ratio of 1:87. This is very easy to find in most hobby shops and means that you can have many different sections and parts for your collection.

The HO scale should be able fit adequately in most people’s homes, even if you have small house. You can measure out the track that you want to use ahead of time to ensure that you have enough space. The HO scale looks great as it still has a decent size and gives a great visual effect. You can also start with a small, basic track and then add other sections to it as you move forward.

If you have a lot of space, then you can choose the garden rail sized scales. These are the largest that you can currently find and require a huge amount of space. This is the reason for them being termed garden railway models.

As you can see, there are a number of options open to you, so you have a lot to choose from. You can find more help by searching online or asking other hobbyists.

Mnumonic Checklist for Vital Actions |

January 21st, 2010

Author: Chris Puddy

I have flown many different types of aircraft, and when I was operating both Airline and Air Taxi work single crew it was often slow and ponderous to try and use a check list, especially on simple aircraft like the Islander or Trislander.
So I developed a Mnemonic  which I have adapted and use for all the aircraft that I currently fly or have flown.  It is necessary to get the mnemonic in your head first, and some of these are well known like the FREDA checks or the HASELL checks that are used for the cruise and pre-aerobatics.   When reading many UK checklists there is a pretty standard mnemonic annotated within the checks.  This is the one I have adapted and it works for all aircraft I have flown including turboprops like the King Air or Twin Otter.
If you want to develop your own based on the following if it does not quite fit into your current checks, then it is easy to adapt.  What is needed is to carefully go through the aircraft check list and make sure that using this mnemonic everything is covered.  If there is something missing, then weave it into your mnemonic.
For example, the checklist for piston aircraft does not include turning on the autofeather, and so when I go through the check list, and I get to M for Mixture, Mags and Master, I then add this memory sequence.  Manual = Auto feather.  Job done.
So here is the list I have created, and you may notice that the final check is controls full and free.  I have a good reason for this having taken off in a Twin Otter with the control locks in.  That is another story that I may write about one day.
T   Throttle friction tight
T   Trim set
M   Mixture Rich. Mags on Both. Master on both switches. Autofeather on.
P   Propellor levers full forward
F   Fuel.  On and sufficient. Correct tanks. Fuel Pump on. Fuel primer Locked.
F   Flaps set as required.
I   Instruments and radio aids set as required for departure
H   Harnesses
H   Hatches and general security.
D   De-Icing as required. Pitot Heat as required.
C   Caution lights.  Out or as expected.
A   Altimeters.  Set for departure.
When cleared for Take Off
T   Transponder for radar visibility On. Strobes for human visibility On.
C   Controls Full and Free.
That’s it.  I think you will find that covers everything in your aircraft, if not just modify it a bit, or put in a new letter or sequence of letters that you can remember.  For instance the DCA is easy to remember for me as many countries have a Department of Civil Aviation.

Creating Realistic Scenery For O Model Trains |

January 21st, 2010

Author: David Blackburn

In order to create the most realistic scenery for O model trains, you will need to get familiar with the different methods of cutting and shaping extruded foam. There is an art form to using handsaws, wire brushes, and box cutters in order to create the most realistic scenery. Cutting your Styrofoam will help to lay the groundwork for the scenery, but you need to be familiar with the different methods used in order to paint and cover the scenery in order to make it look like it is alive.

Most people will use paint like burnt umber in order to paint what will look like dirt. This will serve as the base for the landscape in most terrains. If you are looking to have a snowy mountain scene, you may want to use a dark grey paint instead. The paint will have to dry before you can move ahead with any part of the project. Make sure the paint completely covers the Styrofoam. Use two or even three coats of paint if necessary to completely cover the base foam. Many people will use cheap house paint if they are looking to cover large layouts. You will quickly see the quality of the paint does not matter as much as the ability to cover the layout evenly.

Once the paint has had a chance to dry, there are several different ways you can add vegetation to the layout. Because of the size of O model trains, many opt to buy moss sheets from a nursery. These sheets can be either glued into place, or simply laid on. They are preferred because they are real vegetation, which will last a long time without decaying. If you spray the moss with a fine mist of water, it will actually grow a little bit while on your layout.

Lichen is a great way to add shrubs to your scenery. The more popular way to add these to the landscape is to use some diluted schoolhouse glue. Simply mix the glue with water and then dip one end of the lichen. Use the glue in order to stick the lichen into the exact spot you would like for it to be in. The glue will dry clear, so you will not have to worry about it being seen. Another way you can add lichen to a layout is through the use of fine wire. The wire is wrapped around the middle of the lichen and then stuck into the Styrofoam.

Another great way to add realism to your O model trains scenery is to add small tress to it. This is accomplished through the trees you buy from the hobby shop. While there, you should also buy the blue polyurethane that will be poured into the riverbed you have created with the help of your wire brush. Adding some boats to the side of the river is a great way to add more realism to the environment you have created. Have fun in your mini world creating realistic scenery for your O model trains and let your imagination run wild.

Do You Play Golf In the Winter? |

January 21st, 2010

Author: Scott Kowalski

It’s that time of year in the Northeast part of the country where only the true die hard golfers are still playing.

Most golfers have put their golf clubs away and are getting ready to nestle into their warm homes for the winter. Only to dream about what next year’s golfing is going to be like.

For many who are retired they are now flocking down into the warm sections of our country, where they are able to keep playing golf.

While a number of players put away the sticks after Thanksgiving, there are still golf courses that remain open year round. Their virtually crying out for your winter golf business.

There are golf courses that are frequently free of snow much of the off season. Some of these courses might have temporary greens, and many others allow play on the regular greens and tees.

There is no reason to be blue with cabin fever come January. There is a fraternity of golfers who still get together even with snow on the ground with a stick as a flag stick that allows for the game of golf to continue.

Golf can be played despite a layer of crusted snow over much of the area. The ground maybe hard and the golf ball is frozen dead. Which doesn’t allow it to fly very far.

There’s just too many ways to spice up the remaining days of Old Man Winter with a bit of Old Man Par for that to happen.

However, you get that phone call from your friends lets go play 18 holes and the next thing you know you can’t wait to get to the golf course.

The first time you play winter golf and your all bundled up. You can’t even move there is no flexibility and the cold winds that are howling blows right through to your bare bones.

You shiver and shake from the freezing cold but, your out there because you love this game and quitting is not an option.

So you slip on a pair of woolen winter golf gloves. Then you’re forced to tee off in front of strangers. Shadowy silhouettes bobble in the windows of the pro shop shelter watching you.

You twist yourself like a fool sadly mimicking your golf swing. Timing and Tempo is non-existent. You are a fool or public clown to be out there in the cold weather.

Unlike playing in warm weather your out there on your own in a solitary way. The pro shop itself is closed for business and the tee markers are in the shed.

There are snow piles everywhere and you might lose more than your share of golf balls wherever they land. It’s beyond being quite. Coffee isn’t enough to keep you warm and a flask of brandy might do the trick.

The trees are bare, and the greens are ringed in winter fungus brown. Now no one watches you, even the guys you play with. You tee off into a kind of friendly abyss.

You walk quickly, though there’s no one behind you. You are playing winter golf, the most private game of them all.

I’ve never much cared for winter rules. Kick the ball with your foot wedge as you poke it out from under a bush. Drop a new one out of your pocket for all I care, but don’t hide behind some notion of those dopey winter rules.

A Key to playing in January and February are the toughest months for golfers. Just keep moving. Who wants to risk hitting a long iron thin and leaving his frozen hands feeling like they’ve been massaged with an ice pick?

Your hands are more important then your head in keeping warm. You lose the most heat through your hands. Being ungloved I had hit the point where they seemed like only reminders of hands. Stinging with every shot you take. That’s how it goes in winter golf.

The golf course is painful and arctic, a grim testament to the permanence of the game laid out on the tundra landscape of a dormant golf course.

Winter golf wears you out, no matter how many layers you wrap yourself into. “What’s the attraction?”

You play winter golf because the golf fever gets too bad. You get a sense of what you’ve lost in the dark cold months of winter. It had been eight weeks since I’d last played, and I was hungry for it.

When you want even the dimmest sliver of summer. You put layers of clothing on. You carry the golf bag the way a mountain man carries his hides. Like something purposeful and a bit heavy from being wet.

You creep up on the familiar spots of summer, and they offer an entirely new challenge. You begin to see the things you’ve wanted to do. The framing of golf shots that can’t show themselves to you unlike in the summertime.

There is something new about the golf course in winter. Sometimes you can find me out there getting ready to sooth my aches and pains in private.

So there I am about 150 yards out with the sun creaking through heavy dark clouds. I stick my hands inside of my pockets where I have a couple of pocket warmers and walk up to my next shot not thinking about how cold my mind and body is.

My ball lies on a thin patch of crusted snow and I have less than 180 yards to the green. The wind starts up again So I take my address to the golf ball, focused only on my swing thoughts, and draw my club back. I could sense the frost on my face. The grass below looked like wounded and forgotten needles of grass.

Turning through the shot, I could see my frozen hands giving me the dimmest correspondence of contact. I believe the ball rose in a stiff arc. I could not tell you, as I was moving forward out of balance before it landed.

I didn’t listen to my friends shouting encouragement. I was alone with my thoughts, with my golf bag, and the season around me.

Another alternative is the sunshine state of Florida and the desert areas out west. There are package deals that includes air fare, hotels, and a number of rounds of golf for a manageable price.

I encourage you to pursue the best deals through travel agents and the internet. To find the best deals do your searching on the internet for golf vacations in the designated area you want to travel to. At least this way your in warmer weather and not have to wear warm clothes being bundled up

Happy Holidays To All Of My Fellow Golfers! I hope 2010 will be even a better year in all of your endeavors including shooting the best golf of your life.

Things to Keep in Mind when Preparing for a Backpacking Adventure |

January 21st, 2010

Author: Matt Helphrey

Serious backpackers and hikers know how important it is to keep your carrying equipment as light as possible. This will help ensure that you are able to hike the distance you need to go and in much less time. In order to do this, you will need to make sure that your three main pieces of equipment, the backpack, sleeping bag, and shelter, all weigh less than five pounds combined.

Sure it would be nice to take all the amenities with us on our backpacking experiences, but half the fun is surviving on the essentials and using Mother Nature and the land as our playground. If you were to pack more than just the items you need, you wouldn’t be able to get far, you may have a sore back, and depending on conditions, it could be extremely hazardous to your health.

Some of the basic equipment you are going to need would include a knife, matches, first aid kit, water, food, and even a whistle to use in emergency situations. If there are a lot of you going on this excursion, you can always spread other important items amongst more items like a map, flashlight, and sunscreen Any more than that is going to weigh your pack down too much. But your safety is the most important thing to consider, so pack accordingly, but pack light.

As I mentioned earlier, you can significantly cut down on the weight of your equipment by buying lightweight essentials. They do make super lightweight backpacks, shelters, and even sleeping bags that weigh less than 3 pounds. So if you can cut back the weight on these three items alone, it will make things much easier and will allow you to pack more items.

Avoid buying big and bulky backpacks. It may seem like a good idea to buy something that has a ton of gadgets, compartments, zippers, and pockets for a hiking trip. But a simple backpack with a lightweight frame is the wisest way to go.

Same thing with sleeping bags. A big and bulky sleeping bag is in no way a smart decision. Light weight bags don’t mean you are going to be giving away comfort or sleep at night. These bags are made with down and will keep you plenty warm at night. Buy your bag according to the weather you are going to use it in. They make summer bags for temperatures around forty-degrees that weigh only a pound! Colder temperature bags shouldn’t weigh more than three.

Keep in mind that the lighter the equipment, the more fragile it will be. So take extra caution to take extremely good care of your new hiking and camping equipment and it will last a lot longer.

Learn To Play Guitar for Beginners: A Lesson in Chords |

January 21st, 2010

Author: Luke Harlan

Before you start instruction with any play guitar for beginners material, you should know a few things first. For example, do you know exactly what makes up a song that is played on a guitar? If you said notes, you are correct. Ifnot , now worries. That is why you are a beginner for now… but not for long.

Notes make up the foundation of another critical part of any guitar song which are theChords. Most guitar songs require you to know some chords. Chords are just a series of notes that are played in unison, and they sound very melodic when played correctly.

Now, any type of play guitar for beginners lessons you take will usually start you off with the easy to learn chords. The easiest guitar chords are G, C, D, and A. These are easy because they will not require you to use many fingers. In fact, these chords only require you to use three of your fingers. Trust me, that is as many as you need to begin with.

You achieve playing chords by pushing down on the strings at the fret on the guitar neck. The fret is the metal bar that divides the string down the neck of the guitar. Then as you push down on those strings, you strum the strings located in front of the hole in the guitars body. It is usually a good idea to start to learn to play guitar easily on an acoustic guitar first. Once you master the basics, you can then move on to an electric guitar, if you want.

Here is a good learn to play guitar for beginners tip in regard to chords. Do not press down on the strings too hard. Most beginners make the mistake of pushing down too hard. You have to find the right balance of pressure. This may take a little practice and time to get used to. If you press down too hard, or not hard enough, the chord will not sound right. Your figure will also hurt for a while until you build up calluses. This is normal.

While playing the guitar, leveling down the wrist of the left hand (or right hand if you are left handed) is also advisable. This will put less strain on your hand. Many beginners do not follow this step and that is why the guitar makes a buzzing sound, rather than a good tune. It can also lead to pain and cramping in your hand. This is why proper technique is so important.

Beginners should practice the songs that have less chord movements, like the chords that touch almost the same fret. There are plenty of these types of songs out there. Finally, try practicing with your eyes closed. Most professional guitar players very rarely look at the fret when they are playing. If they do look at the fret, it is usually because they have to play a complicated chord and they are making sure their finger placement is correct.

You should be able to memorize the hand movements of all chords. The finger and hand positions should become second nature to you. The secret to be able to play the guitar perfectly is by practicing every day. It also helps if you have excellent play guitar for beginners resources to use to learn how to play properly.
