PRICELESS GIFTS |

One of the “gift” books on work table:

His Children by Anita Schiller, photographer and Susan Noyes Anderson, poet

there’s wisdom here

the power of three

the power of surf

and sand and sea

the power to kneel upon the ground

the power to build on something sound

the power to feel

that nothing ends

the power of three

the power of friends

the power of surf

Some finds are priceless. That awesome leather bag you discover at your favorite TJ Maxx store makes you want to break out in a dance. A red dress drastically marked down and then the 75% discount on top of that was waiting just for you-oh that’s divine! The beautifully decorated brown and turquoise journal and box of humorous gift cards discovered underneathe the pile contsruction paper poking out in view for your eyes only. Or that tray of perrenials at your Home Depot that you happened upon because you needed those energy efficient bulbs, and just before you make your way to the check out line, you dart over to garden wares. Your whistling, humming and dancing because of your garden discounts! The treasures we stumble upon when we least expect them are wonderful and so easy on our wallets. You haven’t broken the bank and the retail therapy was just what the doctor ordered.

Oh, it is really one of the sweetest feeling being able to indulge yourself when you least expect it. I have discovered a treasure trove right there at work and there are no costs and long shopping lines. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve walked by the table stationed next to the vending machine and rarely looked at the items on top the table. This table isn’t ornately designed, skirted with a banner, nor display. It’a like the can of cookies on top the fridge and no one notices the contents. You see the can in the same location, but seldom shake the can to examine the goodies. Try it-it really works.

Weekly there are new books on top the table. They are “freebies!” Inconspicuosly in the open! Yes, it’s really an oxymoron. In plain sight there are a several books. If you paid no attention, you’d think they were text books. Not so. These are wonderful books: word puzzles, mysteries, novels, how-to-books, cookbooks, children’s books and inspirational selections. Gently used and brand new books. One day I quickly glanced and then stopped, I was having a “Barnes & Noble” moment and just giggled with sheer delight. The identity of the book fairy is unknown. The books are here today and then gone. But the treasure is always replenished. It’s a book lovers dream! I feel very fortunate and blessed by the donors generosity and am extremely thankful for the unexpected gifts. My personal work library has flourished-it brings me joy! Joy to reach for a book that peaks my curiosity, nourishes my soul, or just tickles my fancy. Photography, fiction, cartoons, crafts, a new recipe, an inspirational prayer or a piece of divine artwork all mine. It’s a new moment to relish. In the midst of a rushed workday, I can slow down for a moment, reach, marvel– appreciate and just be still remembering to breathe because of a priceless gift.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors Save Lives Choosing the Right Detector |

Save Lives With Carbon Monoxide Detection: What You Need To Know to Protect Your Family

Choosing the right Carbon Monoxide Detector to protect your family can save lives. Here is some hard-to-find information to help you. Having the right information about carbon monoxide detectors will help you make the right decision for your family. Just like smoke detectors, not all carbon monoxide detectors are created equal. When it comes to detection devices that could save your life, many families don’t get a second chance. You need to get this right the first time. This does not mean just buying the right detector and technology. It also means making sure you have the detectors in the right place.

The recommended location is one per floor of your home, but at the least you should have one on every floor of the home where someone is sleeping. You do NOT want to locate your carbon monoxide detector too close (15 ft) to any gas appliance or fireplace. Many appliances will emit some small amounts of carbon monoxide every time they start; usually any appliance that has a pilot light, such as many furnaces, dryers, gas stoves, etc.

There are many differing thoughts as to where to locate the detectors in the room. I find it interesting, and possibly more than a coincidence that many companies that have combination CO and smoke detectors, recommend them on the ceiling or high on the wall. And many that plug in to a wall outlet recommend that they are mounted low on the wall.Convenient, huh? This is not all wrong, but I don’t believe it is right either. Carbon monoxide has a consistency of about .97 at 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Normal air in our home is 1.00, so you can see it is almost exactly the same. While this does change slightly at different temperatures and humidity, it means carbon monoxide is not likely to go up or down. It will stratify, meaning it will likely follow the air currents as it travels through our home.

This makes placement something that should be given some serious thought, if not installed by professionals that are trained in knowing how to determine the likely air paths in your home. The air paths are usually toward doors or openings in the room, but that can change with open windows, ceiling fans and while your furnace or air conditioner is running. Getting this right can make a big difference. I recommend that you place them in the middle, which is on the wall about chest height. The best ones have a constant digital readout and this also makes it easy to keep an eye on your detector.

Then there is the technology to consider. The best technology today is the electrochemical sensors. They are much more accurate, able to read lower amounts of CO and will last much longer, giving you a better value. I also recommend that you make sure your detector has the new Figaro technology. Figaro’s carbon monoxide sensor is a battery operable electrochemical sensor which offers several advantages over traditional electrochemical sensors: its electrolyte is environmentally friendly, it poses no risk of electrolyte leakage, it does not consume active materials or its electrodes during operation, and it has lower sensitivity to interference gases. With long life, good long term stability, and high accuracy, this sensor is an ideal choice for CO detectors with digital display.

Also, making sure your CO detector has a constant digital display is well worth the little extra you will spend, as it allows you to see at any time if there is a CO buildup. A few will also show you by the simple push of a button, if any CO has built up in the past 24 hours, alerting you to a potential problem well in advance of it becoming life-threatening.

Choosing a carbon monoxide detector with complete self-diagnostics should be mandatory. No one is going to test their detector every day, so why not make sure you have one that will do that for you and let you know when something is wrong. That is really the only way you can be sure your detector will be in working order when you need it.

I recommend that you stay away from the gimmick alarms that claim they sense CO and smoke. I have never seen one that is the best at sensing either smoke or CO and as mentioned earlier, the proper and optimum placement of both is different, making it impossible if they are a combined unit. It sounds good on paper, but combination alarms are often a gimmick to make you think you are saving money but this should be about saving lives!

Essential Survival Gear For 2012 |

January 3rd, 2010

Author: Stanley G. Mihajlov

An emergency can occur at any time. They aren’t always considered when we make plans for things. And they can happen in good times and in bad. Survival gear packed in advance can safe our lives in the most desperate situations.

Emergencies are sometimes expected in dangerous weather areas or places prone to natural disasters. Certain parts of the world are known for tornadoes, hurricanes or typhoons. Emergencies however aren’t just weather related. Fire can happen anytime and almost anywhere. Snow storms can come up out of the blue, flash floods are never expected, and some cities experience power outages at random times. If we could keep survival gear on hand, there are fifteen pieces that would be the most important to consider.

One of the most important pieces of gear is a map. We should have a map of the campground we’re going to be staying in, of the mountains we intend to hike in, of the caves we’re going diving in. And we should know how to use it. A compass helps with map reading, as does a GPS receiver. Second to a map, we should have a flashlight. Darkness is a danger not because of the boogey man but because we might stumble and fall and injure ourselves. Emergency food rations should also go into the pack we keep our survival gear in. A chocolate bar at the right time can give us needed energy to keep on going, walking towards our rescue.

Extra clothing should be among the things we put in our survival gear or emergency kit. Wearing layers is helpful in cold situations and clothing can be used for other things as necessary. Rain gear can help us build a shelter if we don’t need it to break the wind or keep us dry. Sunglasses, a sixth item for our pack, can protect our eyes from the reflecting sun and help us to keep going. Any item in a survival pack can be used to do something other than it was intended. Always keep that in mind when packing.

First aid kits are important to include, especially ones that are compact but serve many purposes. Bandages, antiseptic salves and creams, and ways of treating burns, cuts and allergic reactions could be crucial at certain moments. A multi purpose tool is a good thing to have in our survival gear, as it might help us pry open food containers, build a shelter or an all important fire. The material to start a fire is also essential in survival gear. This could include waterproof matches, a lighter or a rod that one can purchase cheaply that can be scraped to shoot sparks onto a pile of dry grass or bark.

Normally people aren’t planning on staying lost forever. It’s better to be safe than sorry when packing an emergency kit of survival gear. Be sure to add some way to make water safe to drink. There are disinfection kits available but there are other methods to use too, like solar methods that turn water into condensation that can be collected safely for drinking and cooking. A whistle is another important piece of the kit. Being able to make noise without much effort, and a noise that will be heard for a long distance, could be critical to being rescued.

An emergency shelter doesn’t have to be a big tent that takes up a lot of room. A simple tarp or space blanket can be made into a shelter using branches and logs, rocks to hold the corners down, or even pressed against a snow shelter for extra dryness and insulation. Add to the list of necessary items twenty five feet or more of cording. This can be parachute cord or simple rope but it’s a must-have for survival gear. The fourteenth item to add to an emergency kit is insect repellant of some kind. No one wants to be lost forever and eventually there will be a return to civilization. If its possible, avoid mosquitoes and ticks that might be infected with parasites or other diseases, by packing bug spray.

Regardless of whatever else goes into an emergency kit, the most important piece of survival gear we can bring is ourselves. Our will to live, and to survive, is the most important tool we have at hand in cases of emergency. We have to remember that rescue could be just around the corner and that we must not give up five minutes before the miracle. All of the above items are valuable but our will is the most valuable of all.

Emergency situations can happen anywhere, at any time. Having survival gear including survival foods on hand at all times keeps people safe. All you need to know on ultimate survival kit, a click away!

Recipes for the Tastiest Fried Foods |

January 3rd, 2010

Author: Patrick Carpen

Sometimes we just have to give in to the urge to indulge in our favorite fried foods. Whether you are craving a sweet fried treat or a savory southern fried favorite, this article has several recipes that even the inexperienced cook can master! So if you’re in the mood for a nice fry-up, have a look at the following dishes:

Southern Fried Chicken Strips

Ingredients:
1 lb of chicken breasts, cut into strips
1 cup buttermilk
1 1/4 cup of flour
1 tbsp of chicken instant bouillon
1/2 tsp oregano
1 tsp paprika
vegetable or peanut oil for frying

Directions:
In a large bowl, mix together the buttermilk, chicken bouillon, and oregano. Set this aside for about ten minutes, then stir well. Put the chicken strips in a large bowl and pour the buttermilk/bullion/oregano mixture over them. Roll or stir them to ensure they are fully coated. In a plastic bag, add the flour and paprika. Chuck in a few pieces of chicken at a time, seal the bag, then shake it to coat the chicken. Remove the chicken strips, coat them in the buttermilk mixture again, then shake them in the flour again. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the chicken pieces until they are golden brown all over. Drain using paper towels, then serve.

Fried Fish

Ingredients:
1 lb fish fillets (cod or haddock are best, but tilapia will do)
1/4 tsp of paprika
1/2 cup of flour
oil for frying
salt and pepper (to taste)

Directions:
In a bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, pepper, and salt. Roll the fish in the flour mixture to evenly coat. Fill a skillet with about an inch of oil and preheat to about 375 degrees F. Fry the fish for about 10 minutes (5 minutes on each side) and remove to paper towels to drain.

Onion Rings

Ingredients:
1 onion (cut into 1/4 inch slices)
1 egg
1 1/4 cup of four
1 cup of milk
3/4 cup of bread crumbs
1 tsp of baking powder
1 tsp of salt
oil for frying
salt and pepper

Directions:
Heat the oil to 365 degrees F (for best results, use about 1 quart of oil in a deep fryer). Pull the onion slices apart to separate the rings. Set them aside while you prepare the batter. In a bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Roll each ring in the flour mixture to coat well, then set aside. Add the milk and egg to the flour mixture and stir well. Dip the rings into the batter until they are well coated. Place the onion rings on a rack or other surface on which the excess batter can be drained away. Put a few rings at a time in the deep fryer for about 3 minutes (or until they appear golden brown). Set on paper towels to drain excess grease. Season with salt and pepper, then serve.

Donuts

Ingredients:
2 cups of flour
1/2 cup of sugar
3/8 cup of milk
1/2 tsp of baking soda
1/4 tsp of salt
2 tbsp of shortening
1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
1 egg
2 tbsp white vinegar
confectioner’s sugar
1 quart of oil for frying

Directions:
Mix together the milk and vinegar. In a separate bowl, whisk together the shortening and sugar until smooth. Add the egg and vanilla extract. Mix in the flour, salt, and baking soda. When that is thoroughly blended, add the milk and vinegar mixture. Sprinkle flour onto the counter top and roll the dough out to about 1/3-inch thickness. Cut with a donut cutter or mold into desired shape. Let them sit for about 10 minutes while you heat the oil in a deep skillet (bring to 375 degrees F). Fry the donuts, on both sides, until golden brown. Drain excess oil with paper towels, then dust with the confectioner’s sugar.

Divorce Can Destroy Family If Not Careful |

January 3rd, 2010

Author: Jesse Akre

Few things are as tragic or traumatic as a divorce-especially for any school-aged children who may be involved. It is almost a given that despite the best intentions of the parents to keep everything civil, children will still generally choose sides and ultimately decide who they believe caused the divorce. For this parent, reconciliation can seem like an unending nightmare. In many cases, the scars caused by a divorce will linger on in a family for generations to come. While many families choose the “let’s not talk about the divorce” strategy, few children can accept such a closed-minded answer.

Few divorces begin mutually. There is usually one spouse who files for divorce first and ends up hurting the feelings of the other in the process. It is common for children to identify with the parent who was served papers, especially if they are perceived as an innocent victim or at least as the parent who was trying to make the marriage work. Many children will blame the parent who filed for divorce even when it was actually the better thing to do-for all involved.

It is also common for the children of a divorce to have more sympathy and respect for the parent who has primary custody. This parent is generally perceived as the one who must work a job PLUS take care of the children while the other parent only has to send a check and maybe spend some time with them on the weekends. If deliberate steps are not immediately taken to establish a relationship with the children after the divorce has been finalized.

The primary problem is one of trust. The child often feels betrayed by the parent who, in their mind, caused the family to split up. The only way to reestablish this trust is to make sure to be completely honest when they ask questions and to make sure that all commitments are honored-in other words, the child now wants, or rather expects, the offending parent to now treat them with the respect that they did not receive prior to the divorce.

A divorce does not always have to have a good and a bad parent. It is possible that the family can survive a divorce without completely breaking apart at the seams. When children are involved, it is important to reestablish trust with them by being completely honest and fulfilling all commitments made to them. Only by treating children with respect and giving them a voice in family affairs will there still be a family after a divorce.

This article has several great burger recipes, each one offering a delicious twist that will not only surprise your taste buds, but will cost you a fraction of the price of dining out! Pub-Style Burger

Ingredients:
2 lbs of ground beef sirloin
4 large burger buns or rolls of your choice
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
3/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup chives (chopped)
1/4 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
1/4 cup horseradish
1/4 cup parsley (finely chopped)
1 tbsp olive oil
1 bunch of watercress
Salt and pepper

Directions:
Mix together the applesauce, sour cream, horseradish, breadcrumbs, pepper, and chives. Cover with lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate. In a large bowl, blend together the beef, parsley, and Worcestershire sauce. Salt and pepper to your own taste. Shape the beef into four decent-sized patties. Coat each one in olive oil and cook in a skillet until it reaches your desired doneness. When assembling the burger, place a bit of watercress and horseradish mixture on top of the patty, then top with bun.

Tasty Turkey Burger

2 lbs ground turkey
4 burger buns or rolls of your choice
Salt and pepper

1 shallot (finely chopped)
2 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
2 sprigs of thyme (chopped)
2 tbsp capers (chopped)

Directions:
In a large bowl, mix together the ground turkey with salt and pepper. When the salt and pepper have been well blended into the meat, divide it into four even sections. Shape each section into a patty. Pour the olive oil into a skillet and heat to a medium-high heat. Cook the burgers about 7 – 8 minutes on each side. While the burgers are cooking, mix together the chicken stock, shallot, Dijon, capers, garlic, and thyme in a bowl. About two or three minutes before you finish frying the burgers, pour the chicken stock mixture into the skillet. Turn the patties at least once so they can get a good coating of the mixture.

Oriental-Style Sausage Burgers

6 burger buns or rolls of your choice
1 egg
3/4 cup sweet and sour sauce
2 tbsp soy sauce
1/4 tsp ground ginger

1/3 cup onion (finely diced)
1 (5 oz) can water chestnuts (drained and chopped)
1 cup bean sprouts

Directions:
In a large bowl, combine the sausage meat, onion, breadcrumbs, egg, water chestnuts, ginger, garlic, and soy sauce, and mix well. Allow this to chill in the fridge for about half an hour. After refrigeration, separate the meat into 6 even portions, then form them into patties. Bring your grill to a medium-high heat and cook the burgers until there is no pink left in the meat. You can toast the buns or rolls on the grill as well, if you like. Top the patty with bean sprouts and sweet and sour sauce before adding the top bun.

Teriyaki Burgers

Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef sirloin
4 burger buns or rolls of your choice
1 (3 oz) can French fried onions
1/4 cup teriyaki sauce

Pretty in Pink: Finding the Perfect Pink Tea Kettle! |

January 3rd, 2010

Author: Steven Magill

Many women love the color pink! It’s in their wardrobes, their home interior design, and sometimes, even in the car they drive. Recently, there have been a number of pink tea kettles introduced and it’s causing quite a ripple of excitement through what could be a rather mundane shopping task.

The Difference between Tea Kettles and Teapots

Before you decide which one is right for you, it’s best to know the difference between a tea kettle and teapot. A teapot is used to brew tea and other beverages in. The tea leaves go into the pot with the hot water. They can be made from a number of different materials, but glass and ceramics are most common. A tea kettle is used to heat water. The designs and styles can really vary and you can find them with or without a whistle. If you’ve ever had a really annoying, loud whistling variety, you may want to choose one that has a removable whistle. These can be very handy if you want to use it in the middle of night when others are sleeping.

Finding the Pink Model for Your Home

No matter what shade you’re looking for, it’s available. The designs vary, as well. You can choose from a stovetop model or an electric model. The latter has become quite popular today; however, many refuse to use anything but one that heats on the stove.

You’ll need to consider the type of stove you have before you purchase a new pink model. Some are not designed to be used with convection stove tops and this type of stove can actually ruin the bottom of the kettle. Make sure the one you purchase can safely be used with your stove.

Favorite Brands

Le Crueset has one of the most popular pink models today. It’s very chic and sophisticated, but also very functional. There are several brands today that simply do not pour as well as one would like. If the water splashes out or runs down the side, it could end up causing serious burns. Other popular brands include Chef’s Choice, Cuisinart, and even some of the celebrity cooks, such as Rachel Ray and Paula Deen.

In Closing

You’ll love the newest styles available for your new pink tea kettle and most will not only look fantastic, but function wonderfully as well. Take a few moments and see which brand and designs are just perfect for your kitchen.
