Human rights violations and abuses are not rare in today’s world.

February 11th, 2010

Hiwaar (Dialogue) is a Human Rights Web Society which aims to provide in-depth news and insights from the most affected Arab communities. Hate, political differences, interest and race issues are often among the causes for unnecessary human sufferance. In such a context the appearance of web communities such as Hiwaar, always providing a good space for open dialogue is most welcomed.

Established in Scotland, the Hiwaar Human Rights Web Society is today monitoring various countries in the developing world. Its supporters and contributors come from various parts of the world and this community is becoming a very good source for first hand information and unbiased news from various countries. Hiwaar is also very generous in supporting artists and writers, publishes articles and www.hiwaar.com is very easy to navigate. The translator that enables you to read the articles in your preferred language is a plus in my opinion; another great feature of this web community is of course the forum.

Other people seriously interested in human rights, abuses and violations know Hiwaar is the best source of information. Their campaign seeking to draw public attention to Sudan and the treatment of females and children was very successful. We should continue to keep main stream news agencies aware of these topics and make sure more and more people become aware of human rights violations wherever they might happen.

I think there’s not much we as individuals can make to produce a major change in the world, but only untied we can surely take massive action. This is why the internet should never be politicized in any way or by any means China-style censored. But this is definitely the topic of another article. Visit Hiwaar Culture and Science Network and check out more information in your native language using the translator on bottom of the page.

Join the dialogue at Hiwaar Human Rights Web Society and become a member of the Hiwaar Culture and Science Network.

New York City Travels |

January 18th, 2010

Author: Quincy Suarez

And that isn’t an empty boast.

New York City, hailed as the city that never sleeps, fondly known as the Big Apple, is home to approximately eight million people and with the population still expected to rise in the years to come. New York City is touted as the center of the world maybe because each part of the globe has left an indelible mark in this place. From food to works of art to culture exhibits to tourist spots, whatever it is you want your senses to take pleasure in, New York City most probably has it.

Hotels : This is one of the common problems that travelers encounter when setting foot on foreign land. In New York City, however, you need not worry that you won’t be provided with the kind of services you expect to receive. If you’re the artsy type fond of bohemian living then you’ll probably love to stay in New York City’s Greenwich Village or downtown Soho. If you’re a yuppy and you’re attached to your PDA learning about the stock market, then you’ll feel right at home in New York City’s famous Wall Street. If posh places however are what takes your fancy then take a ride to downtown Manhattan and see for yourself what the Hilton or the Four Seasons Hotel has to offer.

Dining : Whether it is sashimi, pesto pasta, kimchi, shawarma or paella that you’re looking for, trust me when I say that New York City has everything that your taste buds may want to savor.

Nightlife : The hottest places in the U.S. can no doubt be found in New York City. If you’re fond of star-gazing and I’m not talking about those that you can find in the sky, then definitely, New York City is the place to be. Go club hopping and rub elbows with the rich and famous.

Tourist Spots : With so many points of interest to visit in New York City, it’s sometimes quite difficult to just know where to start. But of course, we’ll try our very best. A visit to New York City wouldn’t be complete without touring the following sites:

Empire State Building : Need I explain?

The Statue of Liberty : take a ferry ride to this gigantic statue, a gift to the United States from the French government some centuries ago.

Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museum : now, now, now, don’t you start believing that what you saw in Paris Hilton’s House of Wax is based on a true story. This particular site was even featured in Ripley’s because of the uncanny resemblance of its…err…inhabitants.

World Trade Center : Now, I know that technically speaking, this isn’t a happy place but it would do all of us good to pay our respects to the victims of the September 11 bombing. This tragedy has at least proved that the people of New York City wouldn’t let any terrorist attack faze them into cowering in terror. Hail, hail New York City!

Now, remember that New York City, for all its bright lights, can’t be compared to a bed of roses. So take the necessary precautions to avoid unnecessary accidents. It’s also easy to get lost in NYC so be sure that you always have a map—and a cellphone preferably—handy, just in case.

Happy sight-seeing!

Swine Flu H1N1 Controversy: Is Vaccine More Deadly than Virus Itself? |

January 18th, 2010

Author: byron ruffin

By now everyone has heard of the swine flu and many are concerned that a deadly pandemic is spreading at an alarming rate around the globe. In the midst of the media reporting an increasing trend and televising crowds of people wearing face masks on their way to work and families wearing them in their own home, a fearful population had begun closing schools and canceling many events where a high density of people would gather. Many citizens, weary of the growing pandemic, are seeking the vaccine as a wise precaution. The vaccinations are now being administered in droves and for some groups the immunization has even been mandated.

But there has been some controversy stemming from side effects of the swine flu vaccine. Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is suspected of being caused by the H1N1 vaccine and is causing serious health problems and even death. Concerned citizens are weighing the risks and wondering if they are better off taking the risk of contracting swine flu by passing on the flu shot or to get the vaccinations and take their chances with the painful and lethal Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

The mainstream media would have you know that the first outbreak of the H1N1 strain occurred in Mexico at a pig farm in early 2009 simply by failing to report, or ignoring earlier outbreaks of the same strain at least as far back as 1918. Another detail the major news networks may have forgotten to report is that the swine flu is very rarely transferred from pigs to humans, or perhaps they were unaware of this, and they most certainly didn’t give the 1976 swine flu outbreak much airtime.

The mainstream media had been, and still is, providing extensive and overwhelming coverage of the swine flu outbreak for months before the H1N1 virus had reached the US and while the number of reported cases , let alone related deaths, were (and still are to this day) quite low. Furthermore, Doctors everywhere agree that the swine flu virus causes the same symptoms of the standard influenza virus, a fact that could account for widespread misdiagnoses of swine flu. In one newspaper article, published in early 2009, the large headline read “First American Dies of Swine Flu in the United States” although the report stated that the first casualty of the virus was a Mexican child who had contracted it in Mexico before his mother brought him into the US to be treated at a Texas hospital only the day prior to his death.

The common influenza kills about 50,000 people every year, while the H1N1 strain has reportedly killed less than 8,000 since its outbreak. The problem with the 2009 swine flu debacle, however, is not so much the idea that the media is creating a great deal of fear over a virus that isn’t much of a threat. The idea that the fear of pandemic leads the people to beg for a vaccine that may be more harmful than the swine flu itself is the source of distrust in government over the issue. In this case it may very well be that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

In 1976 there was an outbreak of swine flu at Fort Dix, infections of the strain were only detected for about 20 days-between January 19 to February 9 and did not spread beyond Fort Dix. The outbreak resulted in only one death and 13 other cases but public health officials decided the situation was alarming, prompting them to urge President Gerald Ford to vaccinate the entire country. The vaccine caused over 500 cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and 25 deaths. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a paralyzing neuromuscular disorder. One might wonder if the initially alarmed public health officials were later equally alarmed that the swine flue vaccine killed 25 times more people than the swine flu virus.

Another questionable aspect of the 1976 swine flu fiasco concerns the timing of the H1N1 outbreak in relation to the point at which the vaccine finally started being administered. As previously stated, the outbreak at Fort Dix was first realized on January 19, 1976 and was only detected until February 9th. Also, the virus never spread outside of Fort Dix but the mass vaccinations did not begin until October 1, 1976 due to strong public opposition. During this span of 7 1/2 months, between outbreak and vaccination, there was not one additional death and not one more reported case of the H1N1 virus anywhere at all, and public relations problems were delaying the government from commencing the nation-wide vaccinations all the while.

Despite the public and the considerable lapse of no further indication of an H1N1 outbreak, the initial sense of urgency that led to the vaccinations apparently did not subside during this time. The government wanted everyone to get vaccinate but the epidemic never really broke out. It was a threat that never materialized. Why did the government still feel the need to conduct mass nation-wide vaccinations on October 1st?

The concern of a potential pandemic would be understandable on January 19th, even more so on February 5th when the first death, an army recruit, occurred and also as 13 more cases were reported on the same army post up until February 9th. But why was the government still so adamant about the massive vaccinations after all the opposition and the lack of spreading of the virus after nearly 8 months?

After the fallout from the vaccinations in 1976, which were halted 10 weeks later because of the public’s reaction, the government paid out millions in settlements for damage caused by the swine flu vaccine. However, U.S. federal legislation has, since the 1980s, protected vaccine makers against lawsuits related to childhood vaccines. In July, that protection was extended to makers of H1N1 vaccine. To some, this may be the smoking gun that clearly indicates the government was aware the vaccine would be damaging and this time decided to protect themselves first.

Now in 2009 several cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome have already been reported in recent months. A high school athlete from Virginia was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome hours after receiving a swine flu shot and a French woman was diagnosed with GBS six days after she received the swine flu shot, according to the French health ministry. The US military has made it mandatory for all service members to be vaccinated and deployed soldiers are being told they will not be allowed to go home until they are vaccinated against H1N1.

There are many valid arguments among both supporters and skeptics alike on whether the vaccination is worth the inherent risk that comes with any vaccine. When dealing with one’s own health and welfare, no one source, neither government nor irrational skeptic, should be trusted as a greater authority than one’s own personal investigation and judgment. Only independent and in-depth research conducted by individuals should influence their decision-making process.

Mom denies terror link as 6 arrested in Pakistan |

January 18th, 2010

Author: alabi ayodeji

The mother of one of the five young men arrested in Pakistan told CNN Thursday that her son was in that country to get married, not to plot terror attacks as Pakistani police have alleged.

The FBI was in Pakistan on Thursday interrogating the men, who some U.S. and Pakistani law enforcement officials have identified as Americans, according to Usman Anwar, head of the district police of Sargodha, about 120 miles south of Islamabad.

The five had been reported missing from Virginia, and police are confident they were planning terrorist acts, Tahir Gujjrar, deputy superintendent of police in Sargodha, told CNN on Wednesday.

Pakistani authorities said they believe the young men tried to connect with militant groups.

U.S. authorities have not confirmed the identities of the people who were arrested.

In an interview with CNN, Subira Farouk said her son, Umar, was one of the young men detained in the case. She said her husband also was arrested, which would bring to six the number of people in custody. Police confirmed they have six people in custody, not five, as was originally reported.

Farouk said her son would never plot a terror attack. She described him as a business student at George Mason University in suburban Washington.

Farouk said she and her husband went to pakistan to arrange a marriage for their son, who surprised her by traveling from the United States.

The arrests came after a raid Wednesday on a home in Sargodha, Gujjrar said. Investigators found laptops and maps of Pakistan containing highlighted areas that correspond to regions where terrorists have been active, Anwar said.

It is too premature to link the men with any terrorist organizations, he said, but preliminary investigations suggest they had sought to link up with the Jaish-e-Mohammed and Jamaat ud Dawa militant organizations. Neither group showed interest, he said.

No U.S. officials have confirmed Gujjrar’s information, and there was no indication that any charges had been filed against the men.

The FBI had said earlier that it was trying to determine whether a link existed between the five missing men from Virginia and the arrests in Pakistan.

President Obama said Thursday that he envisioned “a series of investigations” into the arrests.

“I think the details are still forthcoming,” Obama said. “There will undoubtedly be a series of investigations surrounding these events, so I’d prefer not to comment on them at this point.”

Farouk said her son mentioned that he planned to go to a conference with friends. She said she did not hear from him, grew concerned and began calling his friends’ parents. That’s when she realized that he and his friends were missing. She said she thought they had been kidnapped.

Their families contacted the Council on American Islamic Relations and U.S. law enforcement authorities. Farouk said the authorities advised her to stay in Pakistan.

Later, Farouk said she got a call from a relative in Pakistan who said her son was in the country with several friends. She said she was relieved, thinking her son had surprised her, but then authorities arrested her husband, her son and his friends.

A U.S. law enforcement official not authorized to speak for attribution said the five men missing from Virginia were all American citizens and he wasn’t sure whether they are the same men arrested in Pakistan.

“We think it is, but we don’t have it firm,” the official said. “The truthful answer is, we don’t know.”

The State Department said it does not have confirmation of the arrested individuals’ identities. If they are Americans, the United States will be seeking consular access, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said Wednesday.

“If they are American citizens, we are going to be very interested in the charges they have been detained on and the circumstances in which they are being held,” he said. “That is something we would do anywhere.”

The U.S. law enforcement official said none of the five missing men had shown up on law enforcement’s radar before they were reported missing.

Authorities believe their intent was to wage jihad overseas rather than in terrorist acts in the United States, the official said, but “there is still a lot of uncertainty about what they were up to.”

PlateTXT a New Industry Trend |

January 18th, 2010

Author: Kim Leicht

Sending text messages is a growing trend and is possibly considered one of the last miles of social networking. Until now, there has never been a platform that allows us to establish instantaneous and private introductions with those closest to us whom we see on a daily basis.   SMS text messaging has become the new way of communication in the mobile world and PlateTXT is the company that will develop a new industry trend.

What is PlateTXT?

PlateTXT gives you the ability to have private, localized mobile messaging through a license plate number.  This license plate number is a unique identifier which protects your personal contact information and gives you the ability to control how you receive and send text messages.  By law, public agencies cannot associate your personal information with their license plates.  This includes your telephone, address and email information.  The PlateTXT platform provides the same layer of privacy to our customers.  This puts you back in control of your contact information and communication.

Insurance Companies

There are many ways that users can benefit from PlateTXT.  One of them would be for insurance companies who want to offer safe driving programs to their clients.  The goal is to see these safe driving programs as a preventative measure to moving violations, traffic accidents, claims, lawsuits, and the worst-case scenario, the loss of life.  Insurance companies will be willing to offer a yearly discount, comparable to a good-student, greater than the cost of the PlateTXT safe-driving program.

Universities/Colleges

Another safe program would be to Universities.  With SMS text messaging, we are connected 24/7.  Colleges and universities are required, by the U.S. Department of Education, to have a way to communicate with students in a timely manner in case of an emergency.  With a higher education program in place for students and professors, this platform will provide instant communication so that a student who may need an immediate assistant with a professor can contact them within a timeframe that enables them to meet their class projects.  PlateTXT also gives students the ability to instantaneously communicate with one another and still protects student’s personal information.   Online registration has its reward, but what if you were unable to be near a computer when you need to register?  Again this platform provides you an instant method to connect and communicate with mobility.  These are just a couple of programs that can provide quick communication for Colleges.

Industry Trends

New industry trends are constant in our lives.  But what about being able to interact locally and establish relationships instantaneously through safe introductions without compromising your private information?  Well, now there is a new trend that enables private, instant, and localized mobile messaging by allowing you to communicate via a license plate number.

Private Mobile Messaging is putting people back in control of their personal contact information.
