Traveling With Children Can Be Fun |

January 26th, 2010

Author: Brenda Williams

Kids are great. To many people the are even cute; but they can also be incredibly distracting if you are trying to drive but can’t focus 100 percent on what you’re doing because you are too busy trying to make sure that your one-year-old isn’t going to spit up what he just ate all over your back seat. Often times, parents (while they are as well intentioned as they want to be) wind up causing accidents with other vehicles.

Three days ago, I was driving back to my apartment when I must have had at least three minivans packed with kids zip right by me so fast that I pondered whether or not they were driving or flying down the street. Isn’t that horrible? Again, where were the police officers when all of this was going on, and why wasn’t anything being done about it?

If you are going to drive on the road with children, there are several things that you to keep your sanity as well as keep other drivers on the road safe from your motherly duties. If you have ever seen the movie Defending Your Life, you will know that in the very beginning of the movie, the thing that winds up killing him is because he has just rounded a corner and all of his cds have spilled on to the floor beneath the front passenger seat of his vehicle. Subsequently, he bends over (while driving, mind you) to pick up the scattered cds, and when he comes back up, he realizes that he is now driving down the wrong side of the road. Before he has time to properly react, he then realizes that he is about to plow head first into a bus. The same thing can and does happen with many people- especially parents of young children.

In order to placate children, parents will often buy a portable dvd player to set up in the back seat of the car so that their children may stay engaged in a program suited for them. Still other parents will load up their vehicles with an excess or overabundance of toys and other child-like paraphernalia only to realize that they have made a grave mistake once the first toy gets shot in their direction while driving. If you have small children, unless you glance in the mirror and see that there is a major problem, then you really should focus your energies on the road. If it turns out that there is, indeed a real medical emergency, then you should pull your vehicle over quickly and safely so that you may address the issue with your full attention. If you realize that a child may need medical attention, then this is also another key item that you will want to make sure that you give your full attention to, and you cannot do it while operating a motor vehicle.

Traveling with children can be a fun experience as long as you know what your role is: both driver and caregiver, but not at the same time!

The Sunshine Coasts Potential for Growth |

January 26th, 2010

Author: Zane Archer

In this beautiful location there are always growth issues to consider as new people want to come in while those who are already there want to keep them away. Growth can override the peaceful world of the Sunshine Coast that the natives enjoy, but it can also keep housing prices lower and assist the local businesses.

This is an exotically beautiful area with much to offer so the natives could appear a bit selfish by not wanting to share their area with new people. The challenge is to filter through the developers and not allow just anyone to come in and destroy the area with too much development.

The developers of all types have submitted over 3000 requests to develop industry and subdivisions, this creates quite a logjam for the Coasts council. They will need to be picky as they evaluate these requests, industry brings jobs but they also might ruin some of the beauty that nature has given this area. Some development is alright though as some subdivisions are more attractive than the original patch of land where it started.

At the present time the local Bligh government would be amenable to brining in 75,000 more people. But there must be an appropriate infrastructure for all these new people and some incentives for the current populace.

It will probably take some time to sort through all these issues but overall a steady growth rate and increase in businesses to the region as well as an influx of new citizens will surely help contribute to the overall function of the region and will help keep the tourism dollars flowing as well. Although we are not looking to make the Sunshine Coast another Gold Coast region, most residents would agree that some growth is inevitable to sustain this region.

Freight Hopping: Tips for Beginners |

January 26th, 2010

Author: Kasan Groupe

Freight hopping can be both incredibly liberating and immensely dangerous if you don’t take precautions. People train hop for various reasons and you’re certain to meet some interesting people on your journeys, but as a seasoned freight hopper myself, I can tell you that there are a few things that every novice jumper should be aware of before embarking on his or her first experience. Follow my tips and you’ll have a fascinating and safe trip.

Tip 1: Make sure you are wearing the appropriate apparel. You should wear dark clothing appropriate for the season. You will need a lightweight jacket, sturdy boots and durable gloves. In most cases you will have to do a lot of walking so you’ll want be prepared and as comfortable as possible. Also make sure that your backpack is dark in color as well. You will want to avoid train security, also known as “bulls” at all costs and blending in with your surroundings is the best way to do it.

Tip 2: Make sure you’ve got all the right supplies. Pack light, but always bring a dark sleeping bag or blanket, non-perishable food and plenty of water. You should also bring some sunscreen to protect your face during sunny weather. Also don’t forget to bring a map and a railroad atlas.

Tip 3: Head to a local freight yard. You may need to make friends with the yard workers to find out when trains will be coming or you can just sit and wait for train horn sounds. When you find a train that you would like to jump aboard, be very cautious when getting on. Ideally, you should always try to get onto the train before it has begun moving to reduce your risk of bodily harm. Never try to get on a moving train unless it is moving extremely slow and you are certain that you can get on safely.

Tip 4: When picking a train, try to know the schedule beforehand and try to choose a train that is making a non-stop trip. That way you are less likely to be caught by security on the way to your final destination.

Tip 5: The safest and easiest place to hide on a train is in open boxcars. You can quickly slide in without being seen in most cases. Make sure to avoid boxcars that are marked as “Bad Order” because they are in need of repair and may be dangerous for you to hide in.

Tip 6: The most dangerous part of train hopping is usually getting off the train. If you need to jump from a moving train, you should try to hit the ground running. The only way to do this is to wait for the train to slow down significantly, to a speed that you can match on the ground running. Never jump off of a high speed train because you will likely injure yourself.

How pilots are able to taxi for takeoff and after landing when the visibility is so low |

January 26th, 2010

Author: Jeff Aafedt

This was one of the top ten questions asked in my flying career especially in the upper Midwest during the winter snow and blizzard season.  The short answer is although not necessarily easy there are many tools available and training provided to make the task easier.

As with anything in aviation it requires planning and following a set of procedures for just about any situation.  When dealing with low visibility taxi and takeoff there is a set of procedures and tools to assist the crew.

The plan is that whenever the visibility drops below a pre-determined level which is different for every airport a low visibility taxi plan is implemented by ATC (Air Traffic Control) and the pilots.  The procedures required to be followed by pilots will vary slightly between airlines but do not allow taxi or takeoff if the visibility is below pre-determined values.  If the value allows taxi and takeoff specific airport taxi diagrams must be used and procedures followed to guarantee that the airplane does not get lost while taxiing to the intended runway for takeoff.  There are also various high intensity taxi lights and signage of various colors to assist the pilots in maintaining situational awareness while taxiing.

Once the pilot is ready for takeoff again there are certain visibility requirements that must be met and are specific for each airport, runway and crew.  Not all runways allow takeoffs for the same low visibility.

Runways that allow for the lowest visibility takeoffs must have high intensity runway edge lights, runway centerline lights and runway centerline markings.  For each one of these items that are not present a step up to the next higher visibility would be required.  I must mention that these are all very high intensity lights that make seeing in low visibility much easier.  Another way of explaining is the most basic runway light configuration is runway edge lights, for each additional tool, runway centerline lights or markings a step down to the next lowest published visibility is allowed.

This is why takeoff and landing is permitted at airports when often times the visibility on the drive to the airport for departure was nil or nonexistent.

Why People Move to Florida in the Winter |

January 26th, 2010

Author: Dan Carson

While it is easy to understand why people vacation in Florida, some people move to Florida for the entire winter. Areas of Florida, including Miami, are so popular that they appeal to those wanting to escape the cold and wintry weather in states where temperatures often fall – or stay -below freezing for much of the year. Because so many people move to Florida for a good part of the year, there is an actual term, snowbirds, for these people. Snowbirds want to flee the snow and be somewhere warm. And why not?

In addition to warm weather, Florida has much to recommend it as both a tourist attraction and a place to live in the winter. One of the most appealing features? Tax benefits…Florida has no personal income tax. This means that people can still keep their homes in another state, as long as a home or condo in Florida is a primary residence.

In many cases, they need to spend the majority of they year, at least 9 months, living in Florida. Of course, much of that time covers the winter months. If Florida is going to be a primary residence, there isn’t much point in spending part of the year in a cold climate. To make the most of Florida, people move there for the winter and smile when they think of all that they are escaping, from slippery roads to icy or snow covered roofs and sidewalks.

By moving to Florida for the winter and most of the year, people can save a great deal on taxes. Florida’s tax advantages are so great that only a handful of states have lower taxes. If the warm weather in Miami and other parts of Florida weren’t reason enough to move there, the tax savings can be the deciding factor.

Then there are the health benefits. Doctors advise people whose medical conditions are aggravated by cold weather to move to Florida and get relief. Balmy temperatures and a relaxed lifestyle promote healthy living in Florida, also known as “the sunshine state”. There isn’t a need to drag along heavy winter coats or sweaters and stress is kept to a minimum. Cars don’t have to winterized, snow shovels or snow blowers don’t have to be kept ready and the heating bill is low. No more shock at opening an electric or gas bill and seeing the figures mounting into the hundreds per month just to keep the chill away!

When it comes to those of retirement age, Florida is often the first choice for a winter location. Tired of maintaining a home in the winter, dealing with higher taxes and other irritations, many retirees are ready to make their vacation destination their permanent one. So they move to Florida in the winter to “test drive” their retirement plans. Often, they end up living there all winter long and start making arrangements to stay there even longer. They may have to work in another state for part of the year but ease themselves into the Florida lifestyle as quickly as possible.

Florida, including Miami, has a wide variety of free attractions. This makes Florida a relatively low-cost place to live, depending on location. When real estate prices are at a low, many lovely homes are rented or sold for bargain prices, making it easy to find gorgeous living spaces for low rates. It costs nothing to walk along the waterfront, gaze out over a scenic ocean or bicycle down sidewalks or bike paths. For those who want easy living, Florida is a natural destination for winter.

What to Bring For Your Florida Beach Vacation |

January 26th, 2010

Author: Dan Carson

After working hard over the past year, your long anticipated Florida beach vacation is finally upon you. Your travel and hotel accommodations are squared away – all that is left is packing your suitcase and heading out the door. Whether your destination is Miami or the Keys, taking note of the following suggestions will help to ensure you have everything you need for an amazing vacation in sunny Florida.

Clothing

Since you will be sulking in warm weather, make sure you pack plenty of shorts and light shirts. After a few minutes in the Florida heat, it is very likely that you will want to change into something more comfortable quickly. Because it can get a little chilly at night, pack some jeans and a cozy jacket just in case. If you plan to hit the beach, don’t forget to bring your swim gear. You may want to pack two sets of swimsuits or trunks so you don’t miss out on a refreshing dip while the outfit you wore previously in still drying. As for shoes, make sure you bring along a pair of flip flops or sandals for hitting the beach and a pair comfortable tennis shoes should you decide to do a reasonable amount of walking.

Beach Essentials

Sunscreen is an absolute must for a Florida beach vacation. They don’t call this place the Sunshine State for nothing. Without the proper protection, the sun can be very brutal on your skin. Not to mention, it would be quite embarrassing if you had to walk around with sunburn for the remainder of your trip. In addition to quality sunscreen, bring along a cool pair of sunglasses, and a couple of beach towels. You want your vacation to be full of memorable moments so don’t forget your camera so you can reflect back on the time you spent in Florida. If you are going to be laying out on the beach, you may want to pack your iPod or preferred digital media player, in addition to other items that could make the experience more enjoyable. To make sure you have an easy time lugging all this stuff to the beach, get yourself and nice-size canvas bag that will comfortably store all the items you plan to bring along.

Extras

If you are going to Miami or any other place in Florida, you might as well bring your passport along with you. Sure, you are not traveling to another country, but it’s always a good idea to have it with you. Who knows – you might encounter a deal offering a cruise to the Bahamas that is too good to pass up. Also consider packing an umbrella or raincoat. Florida isn’t all sunshine as the weather can be quite temperamental. Having a way to fend for yourself from the rain is always a smart move. Lastly, pack a good book in your carry-on bag. This could be to hold you over on the flight or while you are relaxing on the beach. Remember … you’re on vacation. Take a load off and enjoy yourself.

Weekend Vacation Ideas |

January 26th, 2010

Author: Dan Carson

If you don’t have a lot of time or a large budget you may want to consider a weekend getaway rather than a long vacation. People are busy these days and in these trying economic times it can be difficult to take a couple weeks off to go relax. Many people are taking weekend vacations these days!

Beach Vacations are a great way to spend the weekend. If you love close enough to the beach to drive they are even better. There are many times of the year that you can also get inexpensive weekend flights to beach towns such as Miami. There is no better way to spend the weekend than relaxing seaside with a frosty beverage.

Camping- While it may seem a little far off from the beaches of Miami, camping is a fantastic way to spend a weekend. Not only is camping a nice little get away from the everyday stresses of life, it is also a great bonding experience for families. Leave the cell phones, laptops and IPods at home and head out into the wilderness for some quiet time with your family. Digital cameras are allowed! You’ll want to take plenty of pictures, so that the memories you make on your camping trip will last a lifetime!

Concerts or Music Festivals- If you are a lover of music then there is no better way to spend a weekend than taking a short road trip to see your favorite band. While you are on your road trip take some time to check out the different attractions in the city that you are visiting.

Theme Parks- Even if it’s only an hour away, a theme park is a great way to enjoy some time with the kids. Staying overnight at a hotel will be a fun memorable experience. Plan a day at your local theme park and an evening of pizza and swimming at the hotel pool. This is a treat during the winter months for those who live in cold climates.

Vegas- Vegas, Atlantic City and Reno all make great places for weekend getaways. There is so much to do in these cities that even if you don’t gamble you are still bound to have a great time. You can take in a fabulous dinner and a show. Or eat at one of the many cheap buffet restaurants and people watch on the strip. There is even room for a little golf in Reno. A weekend is the perfect amount of time for a place like Vegas and the good news is that the travel deals to Vegas are fantastic. At times you can get your flight and room for less than $400 a person!

Golfing- Golfing getaways are a great way to let go of your stress and unwind. Maybe there is a golf course within a few hours of your home that you have been dying to play. Take a weekend trip to play golf with your buddies. You won’t regret it.
