A surgical tech is one of the most sought-after professionals today. It’s often heard in the medical profession that “a good surgeon is only as good as his tech.” Even the best surgeon still needs the services of an equally good assistant in order to perform his or her duties with the highest quality. Healthcare as an industry is booming because of changing lifestyles that lead to related disorders that need to be treated every day. This is a profession whose importance has not changed with time and, as such, continues to be one of the most attractive avenues of employment today.

Did you ever wonder what is so attractive about the profession that so many people are making a career for themselves as a surgical tech? Well, there are many reasons; among them is the fact that it does not take long years of study to become one. Generally, it takes anywhere between nine months and a couple of years to get trained for this job. You might also need to obtain some certification, and you have the option of either pursuing a full-fledged training program from any accredited institution or taking the national level certification test. Can you think of any other employment option that takes so little time to get trained and pays you such a large salary?

Talking about salaries always catches everyone’s attention! Let’s look at how much a surgical tech can make in a year. Salaries can range from $25,000 to over $50,000 annually, depending on location and specialty. Furthermore, demand for the position continues to drive up salaries. Looking at the industry as a whole, the average salary is around $40,000 per year. The point is, whichever way we look at it, this profession is definitely an excellent employment option. This is one of those few professions where you can get trained in a short while and get paid really well.

So, what else do you need to know about how to become a great surgical tech? An important thing to do is to get certified. That’s because the more certifications of specializations you carry, the more you will get paid. I would suggest you consider taking up courses like Certified Clinical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery Certified Designation (TS-C). The importance of obtaining such certifications is also emphasized in the website of the Association of Surgical Technologists. Employers give a great deal of importance to these certifications; many of them are even willing to pay for the maintenance of these certifications in order to keep you certified. This is also confirmed by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. They have noted that properly certified techs can earn anywhere up to five dollars more an hour than uncertified techs. And that’s a lot of money.
