Indian Passenger Vehicle Industry: ‘Small is beautiful’

Owning a car is aspired by every Indian household and with low penetration, increasing income levels and resumption of buoyancy in the economy, the opportunity in the passenger vehicle market is humungous. At present, around 30 out of every 1,000 households in India own a car. Even if the households that can afford owning a car are considered, the penetration is as low as 45 per cent. Having said this, of the households affording a car, around 70 per cent fall at the bottom of the income distribution pyramid and can afford owning a small car only. Furthermore, the excise duty on small car is lower at 8 per cent as against 20 per cent on big cars. This would translate into strong growth in the small car segment. The factors like households affording big cars but opting for small cars on account of their easier maneuverability given the traffic chaos and parking constraints in metros and poor infrastructure and congested agglomerations in smaller towns would help pushing the small car sales growth. Furthermore, rich households opting for small cars as their additional cars either for female or young members in the family or for smaller trips would also push small car sales. ( http://www.bharatbook.com/detail.asp?id=129357&rt=Indian-Passenger-Vehicle-Industry.html )

Nano is foreseen to give a supply-side push to the small car sales, as its first year cost of ownership, which typically determines the threshold income levels for buying the vehicle, is around 25 per cent lower than Maruti’s 800, the next cheapest available car. This has added 1 million households that can afford buying a car by 2013-14. The Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have taken into cognizance the humungous opportunity in small car sub-segment. Four out of the six launches till date in calendar 2009 fall in small car sub-segment, which includes Tata Nano, Maruti Ritz, Fiat Punto and Honda Jazz. Only Tata Manza and Chevrolet Cruze (General Motors) fall in mid-size sub-segment. Eight more launches are expected in the small car sub-segment in the next 15-18 months.

It developed a detailed statistical model that attempts to forecast the domestic passenger vehicle sales. The sales are segregated between personal use and commercial use on the basis of interaction with the industry and analytical acumen. Vehicle sales for commercial sales are forecasted on the basis of service sector GDP growth, while the vehicle sales for personal use are forecasted on the basis of ownership cost and the target household that can afford to own a car. Other qualitative factors like macro-economic outlook, consumer confidence, willingness of vehicle financers to finance purchases, actions of OEMs like launches, aggressiveness, sales push techniques, delaer network etc have also been quantitatively built in the demand forecasting model.

The report is divided into four sections. Section I presents viewpoint on the industry that covers domestic and export sales forecasts for the next five years and outlook on the profitability for next 15 – 18 months. Section II provides an in-depth study of the Indian passenger vehicle industry encompassing its evolution and the trends in the last five year. Section III provides profile of key players in the industry, while Section IV contains technical aspects and various key data tables as an Annexure to the report.

Safer Winter Driving |

January 26th, 2010

Author: Bill

Here in the south of the UK we had our first taste of winter snow yesterday so perhaps it’s a suitable time for reminders to help make driving safer at this time of year.
The obvious first statement here should be – only take your vehicle on the roads if you have to. In winter it’s a fact 50% of all accidents happen at night and in wet slippery conditions. Lesson to learn here is NOT to tailgate but leave TWICE the normal braking distance for your speed.
Before you even get into your car make sure you have good all round vision, it could invalidate your insurance if there is an accident and all you did before driving off was to clear a bit of the windscreen for you, the driver, to see ahead, you can also get a booking from the police for committing an offence under such poor driving vision conditions.
Check out all your lights are working properly, if you live alone, to check your brake lights just start up your car and place a brick or stone on your brake pedal while you check your rear and braking lights.
Your tyres are a vital component, while you might have the legal limit of tread on your tyres, 1.6mm,  be aware that your safe braking distance is already affected when you are down to this limit; you might resent having to pay out for tyres sooner than you want to but in winter driving conditions it could be a life saving investment.
Your car battery is another item to be maintained correctly, heaven forbid you get involved in a skid and go off the road in a lonely location, keeping your car engine running may be a life saver for you until help arrives.
If your vehicle does need an anti-freeze top up, (most modern cars now have sealed units but check this out in your car handbook) get a garage to do it, topping up can be done quickly and cheaply and gets you peace of mind.
OK, you’re out there driving, it’s dark and it’s snowing, you’ll probably find it is easier to see on dipped headlights, having lights on full beam in these conditions can sometimes cause snow dazzle which causes disorientation and the next you know is you’ve hit something. Drive slowly within the distance your lights reveal, if a skid occurs turn the steering wheel gently in the direction of the skid, i.e. if the rear end of the vehicle is coming round to the right, turn the steering wheel to the right, do not slam on the brakes, just ease off the power and you’ll have control again.
If it is a case that you have to drive in bad snowy conditions then buy a set of snow chains, your car handbook should have a section covering driving with chains, have a read before you go out as you’ll learn there are different limits which apply.
Finally if the worst happens – an accident – follow these simple rules:-
If the accident is serious and involves damage to persons and/or property then call the police.
If it is a breakdown in bad weather try to get your vehicle to a non obstructive location then call out someone to recover the vehicle for you.
Last but not least is to prepare yourself for your journey, have proper warm clothing on, keep a blanket in the car, keep a bar of chocolate in the glove compartment, and last but not least again, always keep your fuel tank at least half full so you can keep the engine running to maintain warmth while awaiting rescue.
Safe driving and Seasons Greetings to ALL.

Some Car Dealer Tricks Revealed |

January 20th, 2010

Author: Carl Castro

Once you have decided on a car to purchase, you need to still do some more research. The first thing you want to do is find out more about the car that you want. The first place to look is your local newspapers to see what sales price is listed in advertisements. By doing this it can give you an idea of what your auto will cost. It may not be your final cost but it is a good place to start.

Keep in mind, all dealers will advertise a car that they can sell at the cheapest price. Generally, they will take the cheapest level of car and discount it as far as they can go. This is what is referred to as the “teaser” price. It is designed to get customers in the door so they can ask about this vehicle but then find out that it is not the car they want or that it was “sold.” This allows the salesperson to begin his “pitch”.

If you look closely at these ads, they legally have to print at least one stock number on the ad to show that this car exists in order for this not to be considered false advertising. If a dealer advertises a monthly payment with this vehicle then you need to look carefully at the fine print. These payments will sound good because they are actually a payment that figures in something such as a $7000 trade-in and a $7000 cash down payment with a 72 month payment loan, for example.

These are also considered “teaser” payments. When these are advertised on the radio you will hear disclaimers at the end of the commercial by some guy who speaks really fast. The dealer is hoping that you do not pay attention to it. They want you to hear the good price and great payments so you will come in to try to get that deal. It is the classic “bait and switch”.

When a customer comes into the dealer and says “I saw your ad for $399 a month for the Odyssey,” the salesperson will show them the car and then ask them “Do you plan on putting $5000 down and do you have a trade that could be worth $5000?” When they say “No,” as most customers do, then the salesperson says “Well that is what that payment was based upon.” Or he might say, “That payment was for another trim level than the one you are looking at,” therefore the payment is higher. This process is the actual “bait and switch.” The bait is the low payment for a nice auto that brings you into the showroom while the switch is when they tell you that the payment was for a cheaper model. Then they “lead” you into a more expensive model that is more profitable for them.

There is another trick when it comes to advertising. What a dealer may try to do is make a used new car look new. How they do this is advertise a used car but make it look new by the way they word the ad. For example, the ad may read something like “2008 Honda Odysseys as low as $22,995.” Since a brand new 2008 Odyssey sells for $30,000 or more.

This sounds like a great deal. The reality is that the Odyssey that is selling for $22,995 is a used 2008 model with 20,000 miles on it. The point of the ad is not necessarily to sell the used Odyssey, but to get people in the door for the new Odyssey. Conveniently, the “New” is left out of the ad except in the fine print.

Tires – Shopping for the right tires for you car |

January 19th, 2010

Author: Todd Hebert

Tire shopping can be very confusing these days. There are so many brands and so many options. What  are the best bang for the buck for your vehicle? Do you need those two hundred dollar performance tires for your minivan? Should we be thinking about mileage ratings? Are the tires you are about to purchase good for all seasons? Do the they fit my driving habits? We are going to look at all of these questions to help you be better informed on your next  purchase.

Driving Habits – Our driving habits are the most important factor in determining what tires to purchase for our vehicle. Is our vehicle basic transportation to and from work? How many miles do we drive each day? and finally do we drive highway miles, back roads and do conditions change drastically with the seasons?

For most of us our vehicle is the basic transportation to and from work, in this case we need to look at where we live and the driving conditions that we are encountering. If you live in an area where there are many hills and turns you need to keep in mind that these conditions will affect the wear on your tires, going up and down hills for example causes more stress on your entire car including your tires, The weight of the vehicle will al transfer to the front or back depending on if you are going up or down. We also should look at weather conditions. Does it rain a lot, snow in the winter (some drivers run separate snow tires for winter driving) or is it a hot area where our tires are exposed to above normal temperatures.

Is our vehicle a sports car and do we drive it like one? Do we need our tires to perform when cornering and braking under extreme driving conditions? These are all things to consider when purchasing tires.

Tire Types – Now lets’ look at ratings for a minute without getting into too much detail. A performance tire for example is designed to handle extreme driving at high rates of speed, cornering and braking. This type is not the type of tire we need on our grocery getter or minivan and if we purchase this type of tire we are wasting our money for these types of vehicles. A performance tire has a different type of compound that makes the tire sticky on the road. because of this the compound is softer and the tires wear about much faster than normal tires, not to mention performance tires are generally much more expensive.

All season tires on the other hand are a general purpose tire, depending on the brand most of these types of tires are rated for longevity and typically have mileage ratings from 40,000 miles to 80,000 miles. Keep in mind that these are ratings and not guaranteed, remember the mileage you get out of a set of tires totally depends on some important factors such as driving conditions, weight of vehicle, vehicle alignment and driving habits. All season tires are made to handle what we call here in Vermont three seasons and are not usually very well in the snow.

Winter tires or snow tires are a whole different animal, Much like performance tires these tires are made with a special compound that keeps the tire soft during cold temperatures for traction. Snow tires are also designed more aggressive so that you have traction in the winter. However keep in mind that using snow tires in the summer when it is warm will cause the tires to wear very rapidly and is not recommended.

Conclusion – So we have talked about driving habits and touched on some tire types. Again I want to mention that you need to look at what you drive and how you drive it to determine what you need for tires. The important thing to remember is if you spend two hundred dollars per tire for a performance tire for your focus and you use the car for a daily driver then you are wasting your money. First off the all season tires is probably half the price and secondly they will last 2 -3 times longer.

Car Insurance Is The Law In Canada |

January 17th, 2010

Author: Adriana Noton

In every Canadian province and territory, whether you are a first time driver or a senior driver, it is the law to have car insurance when you drive your vehicle. If a driver is pulled over by the police, or in a car accident, and found not to have car insurance, the ramifications can be serious. Fines can be severe, demerit points will be applied to the driver’s record, the driver’s license may be suspended or canceled, and the car may even be seized and a substantial fine may be given before one can get the car returned.

If you are involved in a car accident and you do not have car insurance, you find yourself serious financial turmoil. For instance, if another driver is seriously hurt and their car is severely damaged, you may be responsible to pay their medical costs, vehicle repairs, a new vehicle, or the driver may be awarded punitive damages. It could result in financial damages of hundreds of thousands of dollars. You will also be responsible for your own legal costs as well as the other driver’s legal costs.

As well, if you do not have insurance, you may not be able to afford to pay a lawyer to represent you if the other driver is found at-fault for the accident. In some provinces there is a capped amount for the amount of compensation that one can receive. For example, in Nova Scotia, the capped amount for pain and suffering is $2,500. Pain and suffering claims are not part of claims for loss of income, medical expenses, and damage to property.

Having car insurance will protect you against financial devastation. Two important types of car insurance coverage are Liability and Collision Coverage. In Canada, liability is mandatory in every territory and province. This type of insurance covers you if another driver, another person’s property, and the other driver’s car is damaged in the event of an accident. Collision coverage will cover you if your car is damaged in an accident as the result of a collision. Collision is not mandatory in Canada but is recommended for drivers with expensive cars.

There are a number of criteria that insurance companies take into consideration when determining the insurance premium for a particular driver. Drivers with a clean driving record will pay less for their insurance because they are considered low risk compared to drivers that have a history of speeding and other traffic violations. Teen drivers are considered ‘high risk’ because they are less experienced. However, most insurance companies will offer discounts for teen drivers who maintain a specific school grade average or have taken a driver training program.

As well, there are other discounts any driver can take advantage of such as: anti-theft device discount, a discount if one is a member of an auto club, multi vehicle discount, ‘green’ vehicle discount, discount for maintaining low mileage, and more. It is important to ask your insurance company what discounts they offer. As well, the make, year, and model of the car will affect the cost of insurance premiums.

Without having car insurance when driving in Canada one runs the risk of serious financial loss. It makes sense to obey the law when it comes to car insurance because the premium you pay is much lower than what you will pay if you are caught driving without it.

Driving Safe With Good Snow Tires |

January 16th, 2010

Author: Alex Weidmann

Under a road maps for the car we understand a set of tires complete with wheels and is mounted. Winter tires are offered with either steel wheels or alloy wheels. Not every driver would like to completely withdraw twice in his tires and tires so chooses. These can then be easily disassembled in the spring and summer tires in the spring can then be re-assembled. For winter tires of course apply the same safety conditions as winter tires without rims.

A good winter tires must agree with the M + S symbol and be awarded the snowflake. This label guarantees a high quality of the tire. Equally important are the necessary and tread plates, which supplies all the necessary winter road safety in bad weather. Symptoms of a tread depth of 4 mm as a minimum.

Winter tires must be purchased to fit car model. The rims are different sizes depending on the type of car. Not every tire dealer offers this complete set. The best-known tire manufacturers, Continental, Michelin, Goodyear, Pirelli and Bridgestone. There are also a number of other companies belonging to some under a different name to a large parent company. Audi and VW brand cars require a different rim size than, say, Bentley or the very small Mini from BMW.

The safest way to buy winter tires by extracts the necessary information to his car registration. These can then be in the online tire dealer with no risk and selecting the correct tires for their vehicle model. Some dealers also offer this or used tires to winter tires. This, of course, retreaded tires are cheaper than new tires.

Bad Credit Car Buying – Why Dealerships Request Down Payments and How to Avoid Them |

January 15th, 2010

Author: Jason Lanier

One thing that confuses a lot of people about buying a car with bad credit is the request by the dealership for a down payment. While most banks will require money down for auto, home and boat loans, it’s not the same with auto lenders that offer loans through dealerships. If you haven’t been able to get a bad credit auto loan with no money down at a local dealer, there are options available through select online loan companies.

Down payments are usually requested by dealerships as either a stipulation of loan approval or as a way of adding profit to the car sale.

As a Stipulation: If a down payment is required as a stipulation of the loan approval by the lender, then it’s because the loan company will not advance the full amount of the purchase price including tax, tag and title. The dealership, selling the car at a retail price cannot make as much profit on the car sale under these conditions. They have to make up for it somewhere and requiring a customer to put money down is the typical source of that additional money to cover the full amount.

As Profit: Your down payment may literally disappear from the loan contract. Salespeople getting paid 25% of the front end profit from the purchase price of a vehicle, get paid $250.00 for every $1000.00 that you have for money down. Car salesmen are normally trained to “work customers” for cash down payments and those that do, usually have more profitable careers. This is especially the case with working with customers that have bad credit.

Avoiding the Down Payment Game: You can save money by arranging your financing outside of a car dealership, especially if you have bad credit. There are companies online that allow you to bypass the dealership finance department altogether. Auto loan companies that specialize in helping people that have credit problems can provide lower interest rates and better overall terms with no money down financing programs.

REJUVENATE AUTO: Waterless Detailing |

January 15th, 2010

Author: Uncle Al

REJUVENATE AUTO–Waterless Detailing

WHAT IT IS:  A 15 MINUTE WATERLESS CAR WASH & WAX
When available, I like to look at a product’s chemistry to help me figure out if it really will work as advertised.   According to the As Seen On TV promo, REJUVENATE AUTO detailer contains lubricating polymers, surfactants and Carnuba wax.  The surfactants allow the dirt, dust and oxidation to be lifted off the surface.  Then, the polymers allow the a microfiber cloth to smoothly pass over the surface, gathering up the surface stuff loosened by the surfactant.  Finally, the surface is polished to a high shine by the Carnuba Wax, filling in minute scratches and removing swirl marks along the way.  All this in a spritz followed by a couple of wipes per section.  The ad says REJUVENATE AUTO is a waterless car finish protectant… that you can detail your whole car in just 15 minutes!

BUT DOES IT WORK?
Yes..but….  If your car is extremely dirty, they advise rinsing the car off with water first.  Well, if I’ve gotta rinse it, I might as well wash it using one of the additives you put in your bucket that’s supposed to wash and wax at the same time.  On the other hand, if I just want to shine the buggy up to take my bride out dancing on a Saturday night, it works just fine.   I don’t know my age has anything to do with it, but Rejuvenate cleaning and polishing took me a little longer than 15 minutes.  Of course, my old Eldorado is a bit bigger than the cars today, so maybe that’s why.

ADVANTAGES IN A NUTSHELL
1.  REJUVENATE AUTO is a waterless car finish product; It does save water–The EPA says you can use up to 100 gallons of water washing your car.  Use in your garage or outdoors.
2.  Easy to use–Just spray & wipe.  Endorsed by one of the National Corvette Clubs.
3.  Uses tried and true Carnuba Wax to give a shiny exterior surface.

QUESTIONABLES?
1.  I wish it were more specific as to clear coat finishes.  It says “safe for all finishes”, but I’d feel better if it specified clear coat.
2.  REJUVENATE AUTO doesn’t seem to last as long as a traditional wax job, but a great quick fix for the special occasion when you want your ride looking nice.
3.  Ordering from the Internet Ad:  Here’s where you have to be sharp.  If you took advantage of all the special “Free” and “Bonus” offers associated with the REJUVENATE AUTO, you’d get a lot of stuff that you might not need “for free”, but then pay a bunch for shipping charges.  So, my advice would be to buy the REJUVENATE AUTO just by itself for about $28. including shipping.  I mean it’s all you wanted in the first place, right?

Auto Car Loan Financing For People With Poor Credit Ratings |

January 8th, 2010

Author: Hector Milla

When you have poor credit, you will start to develop low expectations when it comes to dealing with potential lenders. So many lenders will turn down a person with bad credit that the desire to even look for a loan becomes weakened.

However, when you find yourself in need of a new automobile such an attitude is most definitely not the attitude one should entertain. After all, when you need a car you have to get one. That means you will need to find a lender willing to work with someone with poor credit.

Hector Milla Editor of the “Lowest Auto Loan rates” website — http://www.LowestAutoLoanRates.net — pointed out;

“…Are there gimmicks involved with loans provided to those with bad credit? In general terms, the gimmick oriented weak credit loans usually fall into the category of unsecured debt. An example of this would be a credit card with outrageously high interest rates and annual fees. A car loan is generally devoid of the bad trappings of “fly by night” unsecured loans because car loans are secured debt. That is, those that default on the loan are subject to their vehicle’s repossession…”

Once the lender repossesses the vehicle, it can be sold to recoup the remaining balance on the loan. While this is most definitely not a process that the lender would like to go through, it remains a viable option in a worst case scenario. Therefore, the lender can offer auto loans to those with bad credit with less risk than an entity lending an unsecured debt.

“…What this means for those with bad credit is the fact that getting a loan for the purchase of a used car is not always as tough as it seems. There are lenders willing to deal with those with weak or below average credit. Seeking out these individuals will deliver what is needed to acquire the car that a buyer would certainly approve of owning…” added H. Milla.
