TECHNOLOGY

An Essay

By

VIKRAM KARVE

DEFINITION OF TECHNOLOGY

In our everyday lives, most of us use a number of words that we assume have a universal, agreed-upon, and accepted meaning for all people in all contexts.

Often, the more frequently the word is used, the more we take for granted that our usage is the only possible usage of the term.

One such popular word freely bandied about and very much in-vogue jargon now-a-days is technology.

Let us explore the meaning of the word “technology”.

The word “technology” comprises two parts – “technikos” & “ology”

The historical derivation of the term technology comes from the Greek word technikos, meaning “of art, skillful, practical.”

The portion of the word ology indicates“knowledge of” or a “systematic treatment of.”

Thus, the literal verbatim derivation of the term technology is literally “knowledge of the skilful and practical.”

However, this definition is too general in nature and we have to transcend this narrow view of technology since every technology starts from a human purpose, from the intention to satisfy some human need or behaviour.

Indeed, technology is the manipulation of nature for human purpose – yes, manipulation of nature, so let us use a slightly different definition of technology.

We will define technology as the knowledge of the manipulation of nature for human purposes.

This definition retains the notions of both knowledge and practicality (human purposes) but adds the new concept of manipulation of nature.

This implies that all practical or technical skills ultimately derive from alterations or manipulation of nature.

Technology depends on a base in the natural world (Science) but extends the natural world through the phenomenon of manipulation (Engineering).

Since we want to manipulate nature, the ability to predict what nature will do when manipulated is most useful, indeed imperative.

ETHICS OF TECHNOLOGY

By our very definition, technology manipulates nature for human purposes.

Technology manipulates nature.

Man is a part of nature.

By manipulating nature, man manipulates himself.

Thus, technology manipulates man, influences, even governs human behaviour, and in turn impinges on societal behaviour, traditions and culture.

Technology is an entity that intervenes in the life of human beings in multifarious ways, directly or indirectly, trying to alter behaviours.

Thus, Technology has an Ethical Dimension.

The very raison d’etre of technology is human purpose.

What is the fundamental purpose of human life?

Is it to increase standard of living?

Is it to improve quality of life?

Or is it to have greater satisfaction in life?

We can distill all these various aspects into a single holistic concept: VALUE OF HUMAN LIFE.

Thus, the cardinal aim of technology is to enhance the value of human life.

TECHNOLOGY and the VALUE OF HUMAN LIFE

Let us define the value of human life as the balance or ratio between satisfaction or happiness and pain or suffering.

In the context of this definition, the ultimate purpose of technology is to enhance the value of human life, with a long-term perspective, by maximization of happiness and satisfaction and a concomitant reduction or minimization of pain and suffering (physical, mental and emotional).

As a generalization, people want a better life.

A better life may usually mean things like freedom from want, access to and possession of at least some of the “nonessentials”, comforts or luxuries, good health, a reasonable life expectancy, the absence of emotional stress, satisfying human relations (resulting from gratifying work experience and meaningful interpersonal relationships), intellectual stimulation, and personally rewarding leisure activities.

HUMAN NEEDS and VALUES

Human needs and values change through time as technology advances.

Man tends to accept the fruits of new technology more readily (satisfaction, happiness, comfort) whereas he is reluctant to accept changes in his personal life.

Thus, social and cultural changes always lag behind technology causing a mismatch and disconnect which consequently leads to unhappiness, dissatisfaction, pain and suffering (emotional) and concomitant lowering of the value of human life.

A crude but practical way of classifying human values is to divide needs into those that are essentially physiological and those that are psychological.

Most new technologies cater to the physiological aspect by performing Dangerous, Dirty, or Difficult jobs (the 3 D’s) thereby enhancing the value of human life.

As regards the psychological aspect, an example pertaining to Information Technology (IT) may be in order.

Information Technology (IT) caters to two unique categories of psychological needs of humans:

Cognitive Needs – which refer to the human need for information so as to be ready to act or make decisions that may be required, and

Affective Needs – which refer to the emotional requirements of human, such as their need to do challenging work, to know their work has value, to feel personally secure, and to be in control.

Undue emphasis on cognitive needs and consequent neglect of affective needs may cause emotional pain that counterbalances the gains from technology and this may be detrimental to the “value of human life” as a whole.

TECHNOLOGY IMPACT ASSESSMENT

Effects and Consequences of Technology

In our haste to milk technology for immediate economic advantage, we often lose sight of the long-term consequences: the higher order and indirect effects, especially the delayed and unintended effects of technology.

The Sorenson multiple effect network methodology is a useful technique for an analyzing the impact and consequences of technology.

Let us introduce the term malefit to represent harmful effects and consequences of a technology in contrast with benefit as a useful output.

We may categorize the consequences of a technology [Effects vs Consequences] as:

EFFECTS CONSEQUENCES

(i)         First Order                  :           Benefits

(ii)        Second Order              :           Direct Malefits

(iii)       Third Order                 :           Indirect Malefits

(iv)       Fourth Order               :           Unintended Malefits

(v)        Fifth Order                  :           Delayed Malefits

Such analyses definitely help in assessing the impact of various consequences of a technology on the value of human life in the long-term perspective in holistic manner.

Early identification of factors detrimental to the value of human life may prove useful in technology impact assessment to reduce mismatches and smoothen out incongruities.

CONCLUSION

We must not lose sight of our basic premise that the cardinal aim of technology is to increase the value of human life by maximising happiness and minimising suffering.

Ethical Technology Management comprises a harmonious blend of rational thinking and empathic understanding wherein one studies, analyses and mitigates the conflicting interplay between human cognitive and affective processes.

It may be apt to conclude with a comment by RM Pirsig, who states that, “The way to solve the conflict between human values and technological needs is not to run away from technology. That is impossible. The way to resolve the conflict is to break down the barriers of dualistic thought that prevent a real understanding of what technology is… not an exploitation of nature, but a fusion of nature and the human spirit into a new kind of creation that transcends both”.

Online Gaming : Why is it So Popular? |

January 18th, 2010

Author: Mark Thomas Walters

Simply saying that online gaming has become popular is a massive understatement. Since its introduction around a decade ago, year on year it has attracted more and more people, and there are no signs of the growth slowing. It’s not just the number of gamers that has been increasing either, it’s the number of games and gaming websites too. Type ‘online games’ into Google and you’ll see that there are more than 200 million results!

So, why is online gaming becoming increasing popular? Well, you can put it down to a few things. One is better technology, another is improved graphics, and a third is increased interactability.

It seems like a lifetime ago now that Pong, Pac-Man and Frogger were the leading lights of the gaming world, but in actual fact it was just a decade or two ago. In the world of technology though, that is more than a lifetime, it’s an entirely different era! It’s not that games programmers didn’t have ideas for the types of games that we enjoy playing now, it was rather that they had no way of implementing their ideas. The coding languages that form the basis of current games simply didn’t exist in the past, and the processors in computers just not fast enough to process anything more than simple commands. Now though, technology and programming languages are at a level whereby the imagination is the only limitation, and this has shown itself in the great games that are consistently released.

In terms of graphics, as with technology (and yes the two are related), monumental steps have been made. Though you can have good games with poor graphics, it’s hard to argue against the point that graphics really add to the overall experience of gaming. Long gone are the days of watching slow, dull blotches jerk across the screen. Such graphics would not be tolerated by gamers in current times. We now expect top notch graphics that resemble movies, and that’s what we get! Whereas before non-gamers would wonder why we would spend hours watching an uninspiring screen, they’re now drawn in by the life-like graphics and want to experience them themselves.

Online games are about more than just pretty looking graphics though, they are about having fun, and to have fun a games needs to be interactive and rewarding. This is where modern online games have really proven themselves. Multi-player games that pitch you against limitless amounts of opponents from around the globe are now the standard. No more playing against yourself, or a against a poor AI computer opponent. Internet connections are now at the point where you can play almost anyone, from anywhere, at the same speed as you could do if you were playing your friend on a split screen in your front room.

So, what does the future hold for online gaming? Well, the future’s bright for sure. The points mentioned above will continue to improve and as they do so even more people will enter the world of online gaming and, as they do so, more, and bigger and better, games will be created. Sounds good, right?

The Impact Flash and Java Script Had on Online Games |

January 18th, 2010

Author: Mark Thomas Walters

The majority of games that are played online are coded in a manner that means they can be played on most computer platforms. This makes it easier for many people to enjoy the same game regardless of the type of computer that they are using to access it. Consequently, you find, for example, that a Macintosh user will have a very similar experience on a game as a Windows based user, and the online gaming community is brought much closer, as hardware and software barriers are removed.

The ability to have the same online gaming experience, regardless of the computer hardware that you have, has been made possible through the creation and continued development of Flash and Java Script – which are both programming languages. As these two languages began to get recognition, more and more games began to be made using them, with the result being that gamers were demanding that any new computer they bought had the capabilities to play them.

For years Macintosh and PC users were effectively separate camps, and they are still are to some people, but the advent of universal programming languages bought gamers on these two platforms together. Not only could they play and compete against each other, but they could do so on a level playing field as everyone, regardless of what type of computer they were using, was seeing and hearing the game in pretty much the same way.

It is no understatement to say that online gaming, and the Internet as a whole, took a massive step forward as a consequence of those two computing languages. Not only was the gaming world bought closer together, but people really began to sit up and take notice as to what possibilities the Internet held. It was no longer just a method of retrieving and sharing data, it was now becoming more of a multi-media type experience. The Internet was being seen as more of a fun and social phenomenon, and less the domain of geeks. It was cooler to know about the Internet, and to be use it and play games on it, than it was to be ignorant.

Progress and developments since then have been fast and furious, and online games as they now were beyond imagination just 10 years ago. It’s really been a snowball effect, that started with the introduction of Flash and Java Script. Those two languages opened up the Internet to lots of new people, and as more people began to use the Internet, the more companies set about improving the online experience in terms of technology and connection speeds, so as to meet the demands of the ever increasing online market.

Such improvements within the industry have unsurprisingly led to an influx of new people to the world of online gaming – which means the market is bigger, there is more money available, and, as a result, game producers create bigger and better games in order to gain a bigger share of it. The result? Even better times for gamers everywhere!

How to Effectively Prevent the Computer Radiation |

January 18th, 2010

Author: melon

With the development of society, computers gradually play a very important role in our daily life. So how to effectively prevent the computer radiation becomes a hot topic. Nine tips are introduced in the following article.

Put a cactus on your computer desk, which can effectively prevent the computer radiation.

If you are busy, the simplest way to prevent the computer radiation is to drink two or three cups of green tea and eat an orange every morning. Green tea contains rich vitamin original A, which could turn into vitamin A after being absorbed by our body. Through drinking green tea, computer radiation can be prevented as well as eyesight can be protected. Besides, chrysanthemum tea and sea buckthorn oil have the same function as green tea.

There are a lot of electromagnetic radiation particles on your face if you use computer for a long time. Washing your face in time, to a certain extent, also can reduce the computer radiation.

Put color filter plate, special for computer, on the monitor and don’t put other metal items indoors, which may result in the re-emission of electromagnetic waves. When use computer, the brightness of the screen should be adjusted. In general, the brighter the screen is, the stronger the electromagnetic radiation. But it is easy to cause eye fatigue if the screen is too dim.

Try to use new computer as far as possible. In the conditions of the same distance and type, the radiation of old computer is commonly one or two times than the new one.

Put the computer in the correct position. Remember that try not to let someone back toward the screen. The radiation from computer back is stronger than the two sides. The best distance between a man and a computer is at least 50 to 75 centimeters.

Eat foods which contain luxuriant vitamin A, vitamin C and protein. Carrots, bean sprouts, tomatoes, meat and livers of animals may be your choice.

We must pay attention to the air seasoning and the indoor health. Scientific research shows that a material called Brominated Dibenzofurans is released by computer screens, which is harmful to people’s health. So it is important to install ventilated equipment in the room.

In order to eliminate the eye fatigue, it is necessary to put some bananas on the desk, which can make excess salt expel from our body to relieve the eye fatigue because of potassium contained in bananas.

Free Software Download For Windows ? Dos And Don?ts |

December 27th, 2009

Author: WallkerTuener

If you are looking for a website to download free software for Windows, you must be overwhelmed with the choices available out there on Internet. Those who are new to this field may find the task of choosing the right website and the right program a little scary at first because they will not have any idea what to expect, especially if both the website and the program they are downloading are new to them. Add to this the risk imposed by online threats like viruses, spyware, adware, and Trojans. Your computer may get infected with such malicious programs if you download an unknown software program from an unscrupulous website. Therefore, it is very important to follow certain dos and don’ts while downloading free programs from Internet. Following is a brief rundown about it.

Read The Instructions Thoroughly

Websites that offer freeware programs also provide detailed instructions for installation, daily updated new icons, screenshots and descriptions. The first thing that you have to do is to read those instructions and descriptions thoroughly. If you do not do this, you may experience some unpleasant surprises. For example, some freeware programs may require you to have licensed software already installed on your computer. So, if you do not have that licensed program in your PC, the shareware will not work at all. You will only end up wasting your time and precious space on the hard disk. You can avoid getting into such situations by reading the instructions thoroughly in advance.

Compatibility

Compatibility is another important factor to consider while downloading software. Read the system requirements before downloading any program. Is the program compatible with the version of the operating system installed on your PC? In most cases, you will be offered an option to choose the right version of download, such as whether you want to use the software on Linux or Windows platform. If your PC does not meet the required standards, the program may not work at all, which will again be a waste of time and a reason for frustration.

Backup Your System

In the latest versions of the operating system, there is a system restore feature. So, you may not need to create a manual backup every time you download a new program. If the software does not work properly or something goes wrong, you can undo the installation by using that feature. However, do not forget to create a restore point before you click on the install button.

Choose A Trusted Source

Problems mainly occur when the programs are downloaded from unrealizable sources. Therefore, the most crucial thing is to choose a trusted website that only offers hand picked quality software. One of such websites is file horse.   However, sometimes the problem might occur if there is something already wrong on your system. It is advisable to scan the program thoroughly using a latest anti-virus program before opening it for the first time. File horse scans all the programs that are available on their website for downloading, however you must take added precautions.

File Horse does not even require any special downloading software. All programs can be downloaded from File Horse directly in a safe environment without risking the health of your PC.

The PC and its Accessories A notebbok computer is a flexible machine capable of undergoing multiple calculations. The modern electronic notebook computer has an high speed and capacity for data processing, compared to earlier designs. Computer accessories give the facility of working on the computer more relaxed and simple.

They help with using the portable PC more handily, and are designed in particular to help clients in their working environment. They are tested products that add lots of functions to computers. Some computer accessories are simply frivolous customization options, while others are a necessity for anyone who basically plans on leaving their desk with the computer.
Mini digital cameras are a less expensive version of digital video recorders excellent for the conveyable PC user. They’re compact, light and glorious for promoting purposes. A user can download pictures thru a broadcasting wire at a high-speed and can simply send footage through email.

The flash memory can be employed for either information storage and mp3 file storage. Keyboards, scanners and multimedia speakers are critical accessories that pretty much each conveyable PC wishes.

How To Start Writing an Essay: The Five Paragraph Essay Model |

December 17th, 2009

Author: Tom Aaron

If you’re trying to write an essay, this five paragraph model might help get you started. The sample essay is about computers. The first paragraph introduces the topic.

Paragraph 1: Introduces the topic

Example

Computer technology has significantly changed how we live and how we work. At least, that’s what my parents tell me. I’m too young to know what life was like for them without computers. I know only how computers are part of my life.

Now that you’ve introduced the topic, your next step is to discuss your first idea.

Paragraph 2: One idea

Example

When my parents were my age, computers were rare. My mother had to write letters or telephone when she wanted to talk to her cousin in Los Angeles. I can only imagine sending letters and waiting for weeks to receive a reply. Computers make our lives easier. If I could not use computers, I could not communicate with others as easily.

You’ve introduced one idea. The next paragraph introduces a second idea.

Paragraph 3: Another idea

Example

However there are disadvantages that computer use can cause. We can spend too much time online and neglect other important tasks such as studying. I used to spend so many hours using my computer and communicating with others that I sometimes missed exams. I often used the computer to chat, which was so interesting that I did not leave myself enough time to study. In a way, computers taught me to discipline myself and manage my time.

The next paragraph introduces another idea. Notice that each idea has examples and information.

Paragraph 4: A third idea

Example

Computers have introduced me to the world outside Japan. I have a penpal in San Francisco and another in Thailand. With both pals, I use English. These email exchanges have helped me to improve my English writing. Plus I enjoy learning about cable cars in San Francisco and the variety of bananas in Thailand.

Now you’re going to finish your essay. The last paragraph is simply a summary of some of what you’ve already said.

Paragraph 5: Conclusion

Example

Computers have enriched my life. I know people in San Francisco and in Bangkok, people I would not have known without my computer. I have learned to discipline my time use and I have enjoyed myself. I cannot imagine my life without a computer.

One way of looking at writing is to think of your writing as a person. You’re taking this person to a party. You arrive at the party and introduce your friend (Paragraph 1). Your friend gets into conversations (Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4). At the end of the evening, you and your friend go home and your friend summarizes the party (Paragraph 5). If looking at the paragraphs in that way helps you, terrific. If it does not, perhaps you could create an image for yourself that might work.

Here’s the complete essay.

Computer-Aided Scrapbooking |

December 5th, 2009

Author: Kristy Taylor

Photographs are the basis for many themed scrapbooks as they are one of the best ways to remember a special event. Gone are the days of the 4 x 6 inch black and white photograph. Digital photography allows people to make copies of their photos and make them any size for their scrapbook albums. If you already have a computer, printer and digital camera, you are leaps ahead of other scrappers who do everything by hand.

If you have digital photos choose the photo that you want to use as the main object on your scrapbook page. The size and shape of this item will determine the layout of your page. Since this photo is the main focus of the page, it must be chosen first as everything else on the page will be determined by the size and shape of the photo.

Once you have chosen a photo for your album, print it the size you’d like it to be. Most people use specialized photographic computer paper, computer programs and ink to make the copies they want for their scrapbook. Check your favorite computer store for programs, paper, ink and printers that are appropriate for high-quality photographic prints. If you don’t want to make your own copies of the photos you can upload them to photo printing stores via the Internet. These stores will make prints to your exact specifications and post them back to you.

After you have chosen the focus of your scrapbook page, you may want to choose a mat to add emphasis to the theme and photo on your page. A mat functions as a mini frame to add depth to your scrapbook page. You may already have some mats around the house. You may have specialized cardstock or other sturdy types of paper to make a mat for the photo you have chosen, so simply cut it to size. Or you may want to use a mat that you already have, and print a photo to fit the size of the existing mat. There are many types of mats available for purchase if you don’t have anything to use. Choose a mat color that adds to the colors in the photo you are placing on your scrapbook page. But don’t choose a gaudy or overwhelming mat that detracts from the subject of the page.

Adobe Photoshop is a wonderful software program for scrappers. It is reasonably priced and easy to use once you get the hang of it. It allows a scrapper to add captions electronically to photos. Do you need to make some major changes in your photo? Photoshop can do that as well. Many of the functions of Photoshop are point and click, with most of the basic functions readily available on the toolbar.

One of the most popular functions of Photoshop is cropping. Cropping a picture or photo can be done either using hand scissors or using a computer program that will crop the photo for you. Cropping is used to shape a photo or eliminate portions of the photo. When you crop a photo on your computer you can change the shape and size of the photo you are copying and printing. Follow the program’s directions to point and click your photo to the shape and size you’d like. Cropping and other photographic program features can also be used to eliminate items or people you don’t want in your photos.

With a bit of practice, and patience, you will soon get the hang of using a computer to aid in your scrapbooking endeavors. And if you’re lucky enough to be a student, or have a student in the house, you can purchase your software at a much cheaper price.
