After you figure out what you will need the glue for, |

January 23rd, 2010

Author: Paul Ritchie

Glue is an important substance for many things and it comes in a few different forms. Everyone from contractors to crafters has a need for glue. There are special glues for different purposes and different surfaces. That is why when you are faced with a project where glue is required it can be confusing. A trip to the hardware or craft store can reveal so many choices that it is often a headache choosing the right thing. Not only are there a lot of glue products, but there are different companies who carry the same glue products so you will need to figure out which company has the best. So not only do you need to find the glue that works for your project, but you also need to select a company. In short, you will need a glue that not only works well but will also fit your project.

The first thing you need to do when selecting a glue product is to determine what you will need it for. Are you looking for an all purpose glue that will handle most things or are you looking for a glue that will serve a specific purpose? For example, if you are a carpenter, you may need some wood glue for certain projects. If you are a crafter working with metal, you will need a special glue adhesive that will go on metal. For these specialized projects, an all purpose glue is not a good idea.

After you figure out what you will need the glue for, your next step is to figure out where to purchase it. Most home stores will carry what you need. However, if the glue you need is specific glue that only crafters use, you will need to visit a craft store to see if they have it. You will likely waste your time if you try to purchase those kinds of glues at a home store. Also, if you find yourself needing large amounts of a certain kind of glue or adhesive, you can purchase it less expensively online or you may want to look into getting it directly from a supplier. Glue is something that a lot of people need and it pays to do a little extra research to figure out the best glue for your projects.

TECHNOLOGY

An Essay

By

VIKRAM KARVE

DEFINITION OF TECHNOLOGY

In our everyday lives, most of us use a number of words that we assume have a universal, agreed-upon, and accepted meaning for all people in all contexts.

Often, the more frequently the word is used, the more we take for granted that our usage is the only possible usage of the term.

One such popular word freely bandied about and very much in-vogue jargon now-a-days is technology.

Let us explore the meaning of the word “technology”.

The word “technology” comprises two parts – “technikos” & “ology”

The historical derivation of the term technology comes from the Greek word technikos, meaning “of art, skillful, practical.”

The portion of the word ology indicates“knowledge of” or a “systematic treatment of.”

Thus, the literal verbatim derivation of the term technology is literally “knowledge of the skilful and practical.”

However, this definition is too general in nature and we have to transcend this narrow view of technology since every technology starts from a human purpose, from the intention to satisfy some human need or behaviour.

Indeed, technology is the manipulation of nature for human purpose – yes, manipulation of nature, so let us use a slightly different definition of technology.

We will define technology as the knowledge of the manipulation of nature for human purposes.

This definition retains the notions of both knowledge and practicality (human purposes) but adds the new concept of manipulation of nature.

This implies that all practical or technical skills ultimately derive from alterations or manipulation of nature.

Technology depends on a base in the natural world (Science) but extends the natural world through the phenomenon of manipulation (Engineering).

Since we want to manipulate nature, the ability to predict what nature will do when manipulated is most useful, indeed imperative.

ETHICS OF TECHNOLOGY

By our very definition, technology manipulates nature for human purposes.

Technology manipulates nature.

Man is a part of nature.

By manipulating nature, man manipulates himself.

Thus, technology manipulates man, influences, even governs human behaviour, and in turn impinges on societal behaviour, traditions and culture.

Technology is an entity that intervenes in the life of human beings in multifarious ways, directly or indirectly, trying to alter behaviours.

Thus, Technology has an Ethical Dimension.

The very raison d’etre of technology is human purpose.

What is the fundamental purpose of human life?

Is it to increase standard of living?

Is it to improve quality of life?

Or is it to have greater satisfaction in life?

We can distill all these various aspects into a single holistic concept: VALUE OF HUMAN LIFE.

Thus, the cardinal aim of technology is to enhance the value of human life.

TECHNOLOGY and the VALUE OF HUMAN LIFE

Let us define the value of human life as the balance or ratio between satisfaction or happiness and pain or suffering.

In the context of this definition, the ultimate purpose of technology is to enhance the value of human life, with a long-term perspective, by maximization of happiness and satisfaction and a concomitant reduction or minimization of pain and suffering (physical, mental and emotional).

As a generalization, people want a better life.

A better life may usually mean things like freedom from want, access to and possession of at least some of the “nonessentials”, comforts or luxuries, good health, a reasonable life expectancy, the absence of emotional stress, satisfying human relations (resulting from gratifying work experience and meaningful interpersonal relationships), intellectual stimulation, and personally rewarding leisure activities.

HUMAN NEEDS and VALUES

Human needs and values change through time as technology advances.

Man tends to accept the fruits of new technology more readily (satisfaction, happiness, comfort) whereas he is reluctant to accept changes in his personal life.

Thus, social and cultural changes always lag behind technology causing a mismatch and disconnect which consequently leads to unhappiness, dissatisfaction, pain and suffering (emotional) and concomitant lowering of the value of human life.

A crude but practical way of classifying human values is to divide needs into those that are essentially physiological and those that are psychological.

Most new technologies cater to the physiological aspect by performing Dangerous, Dirty, or Difficult jobs (the 3 D’s) thereby enhancing the value of human life.

As regards the psychological aspect, an example pertaining to Information Technology (IT) may be in order.

Information Technology (IT) caters to two unique categories of psychological needs of humans:

Cognitive Needs – which refer to the human need for information so as to be ready to act or make decisions that may be required, and

Affective Needs – which refer to the emotional requirements of human, such as their need to do challenging work, to know their work has value, to feel personally secure, and to be in control.

Undue emphasis on cognitive needs and consequent neglect of affective needs may cause emotional pain that counterbalances the gains from technology and this may be detrimental to the “value of human life” as a whole.

TECHNOLOGY IMPACT ASSESSMENT

Effects and Consequences of Technology

In our haste to milk technology for immediate economic advantage, we often lose sight of the long-term consequences: the higher order and indirect effects, especially the delayed and unintended effects of technology.

The Sorenson multiple effect network methodology is a useful technique for an analyzing the impact and consequences of technology.

Let us introduce the term malefit to represent harmful effects and consequences of a technology in contrast with benefit as a useful output.

We may categorize the consequences of a technology [Effects vs Consequences] as:

EFFECTS CONSEQUENCES

(i)         First Order                  :           Benefits

(ii)        Second Order              :           Direct Malefits

(iii)       Third Order                 :           Indirect Malefits

(iv)       Fourth Order               :           Unintended Malefits

(v)        Fifth Order                  :           Delayed Malefits

Such analyses definitely help in assessing the impact of various consequences of a technology on the value of human life in the long-term perspective in holistic manner.

Early identification of factors detrimental to the value of human life may prove useful in technology impact assessment to reduce mismatches and smoothen out incongruities.

CONCLUSION

We must not lose sight of our basic premise that the cardinal aim of technology is to increase the value of human life by maximising happiness and minimising suffering.

Ethical Technology Management comprises a harmonious blend of rational thinking and empathic understanding wherein one studies, analyses and mitigates the conflicting interplay between human cognitive and affective processes.

It may be apt to conclude with a comment by RM Pirsig, who states that, “The way to solve the conflict between human values and technological needs is not to run away from technology. That is impossible. The way to resolve the conflict is to break down the barriers of dualistic thought that prevent a real understanding of what technology is… not an exploitation of nature, but a fusion of nature and the human spirit into a new kind of creation that transcends both”.

Scholarship grants are made available especially for women who want to return and finish their college education. This can be the one of the best news women will be receiving from the government for some time now. Every mother who wishes to jumpstart or improve their career should grab at this once in a lifetime opportunity of improving their credentials and marketability for employment. President Obama has increased the money grants to support every American’s college education, and has even made available a lot of scholarship programs made especially for women.

This effort from the federal government aims to encourage all women to go back to the employment race to be able to get a better-paying and more stable job. However, you may think that the timing may be off at this time because of the country’s economic recession. While it’s true that there are fewer jobs in the market than those seeking employment nowadays, this move from the government targets the Americans to be ready for the upcoming economic recovery where a lot of job requirements will be available for every applicant. If you intend to join the employment industry in the near future and lack the job experience that employers will require, what better way to improve your credentials than by going back to school and getting that college degree?

Nowadays, it is easier to go back to college if you have time issues because of the availability of online courses. Now, you can study college through online education, and you won’t have to spend more time on your commute to and from school to attend classes. This is especially preferable for mothers who need to be at home to tend to their family at most times of the day.

For the financial aspect of getting a college education, we all know that college school fees are particularly expensive. If you are not ready for this extra expense and you do not have enough money saved up for this purpose, you clearly need to have another means to aid you in paying for your school expense. You may start with learning to budget your income and save up a little for some of your school fees, while getting more financial support from scholarship programs from the government and other private organizations. You can start with your scholarship search online, and you can register for more than one scholarship to increase your chances of getting bigger financial aid. Going back to school now is not that difficult if you have enough information to direct you to the steps that you need to take.

An enterprise is an undertaking and enterpriser is one who organizes and manages it and takes risk. Initiative, risk bearing, co-ordinating of factors of production, use of innovation and provision of capital are the basic elements of entrepreneurship. Solutions, creation, processing and promotion of unit, promotional help, adequate and timely finance, sufficient market stability and intelligence are the main factors effective progress.

This is considered to be one of the most significant organizational changes taking place in the world today. However, though the number of women entering the managerial profession is on the increase they are still clustered in the lower levels of management and rarely obtain positions of significant corporate power. In difference countries where the entry and middle level management positions are held by a significant number of women, experience prove their effectiveness as managers.

4)      Training Scheme of Rural Youth for Self  Employment (TRYSEM)

5)      The Scheme for providing Self Employments to Educated Unemployed youth (SEEU)and

6)      Self Employment Programme for Urban Poor,(SEPUP)

Growth for Industrialization, Urbanization, Education and Democratic system in the country the custom-bound-society of India is in the process of a change. The women are searching gainful employment in different fields. In developing countries they invariably work harden than men. They contribute to economic actively and to the welfare of society through house hold jobs, child rearing, educating children and working in the fields. In developing countries, the discrimination extends to health care, food, property and access to credit.

Women’s organization aim at creating general awareness on the status involves roles, exception, entitlements rights and obligations etc. In many cases women are unaware of the legal rights, to take decisions and great influences by a family the dominance of the male. From 1980’s onwards, the issues raised by WOMEN IN DEVELOPMENT (WID) and, lately, GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT (GAD) approaches have acquire great importance, both for government organizations, non- government organizations and women’s organizations. While WID concentrates more on women’s economic activities.

We need to invest in our people and, especially, improve the lives our women we need contribution from our women to attain excellence in all areas of activity. Our social and cultural attitudes neglects and marginalize women. In public, we can accept and respect women and brag about having a woman as our Prime Minister or a few women’s as Chief Ministers and Judges. But privately, the large majorities of women are sub Jud gated and dominated. They need permission from their men to occasionally visit their parents and relatives. It is estimated that 124 million women work in India (National Sample Survey Organization, 2000). This represents about 31 percent of the total work force. The Government economic survey for 2003-04 has estimated that there are 4.95 million women in the organized sector (both public and private sectors) about 18.01 percent of the total organized work force.

At the managerial level, the percent of women at junior level was 16 percent, middle level 4 percent, senior level 4 percent and at senior-most levels, just 1 percent. Today, to survive competition in a globalizes market, many organizations are our sourcing and contracting out their work. This certainly has created opportunities for home-based work, especially for women in sectors like textile, garments and electronics.

The natural enterprises of Indian women can be nurtured through innovations schemes of micro-finance. The government, financial institutions and private sector can join hands to create women entrepreneurs.

2)      If we can really bring out a balanced society with equal opportunities to both men and women

3)      Boys needed to be made aware that household and child-rearing responsibilities need to be equally shared between a husband and wife.

4)      The government has been pampering organize labor and, by and large, neglecting the unorganized sectors.

5)      Dynamic frame work of regulations so that the vast majority of our women workers get justice and social security.

6)      to avoid sexual harassment policies should be clearly stated and implemented

7)      Every family owned business need to an equal chance to their daughters.

  1.                      (Eg.)   “Mukherjee & Sons” and

                                “Pastronjee & Sons” but also

                                “Mukherjee & Daughters” and

                    “Pastronjee & Daughters”

The government must lead the way and corporate NGO’s and educational institutions should join in to support and work for change. Real change will come when our women are treated on par with men and given equal opportunities. Indian will be able to harness its women power and emerge as a respected nation.

Why You Should Get a Paralegal Degree Online |

January 6th, 2010

Author: Yvonne Corilla

There are many different ways, nowadays, to go about getting your degrees. However, one of the best ways to go about getting a degree is to get it online. This is a statement that holds true for paralegal degrees a well. Today we are going to cover the basic information on why you should choose to get your paralegal degrees online. In the end, you will see that online degree classes are just the overall best way for people to get degrees, no matter what field you are trying to get into.

First of all, when you get paralegal degrees online, you get to study when it’s most convenient for you! No more trying to get your current job to try and work around your school schedule and so on. Now you can choose to take classes when it is convenient for you, and that means that you can study when you have the time to do so. For example, if you work during the day, then you could take your classes during the night from the comfort of your own home. This pretty much gives everyone the shot to be able to go back to school and do whatever they want to do. For the longest time, paralegal degrees were not offered online. However, nowadays they are, and they are pretty easy to come by. Just make sure you choose to get your online degree from an accredited school.

Not only do you have the ability to study when you want when getting online paralegal degrees, but you also have the ability to study wherever you want! This can be done, because your campus can be located anywhere, or at least anywhere that you can find an internet connection. As long as you are able to find a cable internet connection, you can attend class, submit work, and interact with your teacher. See, a lot of people think that when you take internet courses, you are taking the class alone, however, that is not the case at all. In fact, with online degrees, now you can interact with other classmates and contact your teacher in real time. Of course, you can email your teacher whenever you want to, but if you are online at the same time, you have the ability to actually live chat with your teacher, and it’s almost as if they are standing in the same room with you.

The overall best reason to get your paralegal degrees online is because you can choose from a variety of schools. You no longer have to settle with a school, because it’s in the area that you live. When you take classes online, you are able to attend those classes from anywhere in the world. You can actually choose a school based on its overall recommendation from other students, and not just choose a school because of its location. This is something that gives you a sense of power whenever you do it. It makes you feel as if you are in control of your own future for the first time in your life.

Using Pre-emptive Marketing |

December 31st, 2009

Author: Dan Auito

Here are some of the biggest mistakes in marketing today and how you can fix them.

Small business owners are overwhelmed with too many advertising choices and quite often aren’t fully aware of the mistakes that they are currently making which may seriously be undermining their market penetration efforts , every marketing effort consumes time, energy and resources.

Start by stepping back and defining your market, what info, products or services do people want and what can or do you provide for starters, who is your target? Once you know WHO your market is, then start developing marketing plans that you are able to maintain committed focus on.

Focus narrowly and continuously hammer away at key ideas to begin making your brand stand for something, define what your marketing objectives are and work on making every dollar you spend generate more than the amount spent on advertising.

Commitment to a plan is the key: Backing it, implementing it, measuring it, adjusting it, Sticking with it and being patient are the keys to success. Business is often a marathon rather than a sprint, stick to plans you can consistently execute.

Here are some of the best marketing tactics that you can use today.

Simplify your marketing plans if and when you can to make them truly achievable; complicated plans often fail for lack of follow through. Focusing on being new, different or first is smarter than being better or cheaper than your competitors.

Once you define what category you are in, IE… Energy drinks, Personal care, Luxury home sales etc…Only then can you begin to build your brand within that category. You must understand where you deliver the best value and your staff must be able to relay that value proposition as well.

There must be a process that can be followed to effectively achieve your plans, the 3 P’s of productivity are said to be, Policies, Plans and Procedures or Sop’s Standard Operating Procedures, Mc Donald’s was built on this. Process liberates by creating understandable centralized strategy that can be disseminated to outlying decentralized locations for seamless execution.

The above doesn’t always involve large amounts of money, content is often king regarding online interaction today, e-mail communication and feedback is critical in addition to websites, Blogs and video’s for gaining and distributing insight, this in-turn helps in creating significant relationships with your market.

Once you have solid plans to execute do some research on sites like Jigsaw, Sales Genie and Hoovers online to target key high level decision makers who may benefit from what you have to offer.

Using pre-emptive marketing to begin marketing more effectively.

Today’s buying public knows when it’s being pitched or sold too, you must set yourself apart by building some meaningful trust, consumers want a conversation with the vendor through all the touch points you can provide: Websites, E-Mail, Blogs, Phone, Face to Face etc… All work towards creating an experience with you.

Research has proven that customers are 12 times more likely to buy and continue to do so if you make an emotional connection first. 90% of businesses provide facts, figures, features and status quotes which pale in comparison to focused efforts on emotions, beliefs, needs and a history that tells a story.

Instead of telling them all about YOU, try ASKING what do you need now, a year ago, how can I help you get to where you want to go now. Skillfully listen then you can define and deliver.

Start locally IE… town, city, county, state, country then globally, you can’t say everything to everybody so choose a specific audience and speak to some exact somebody’s within your specific niche first.

Seek to set yourself apart from your competition by being first, use storytelling, video, twitter, facebook, websites, blogs, e mail to reach, communicate and deliver relevant content to your audience while looking for feedback, your job is to out work, out hustle, out compete and out smart your competition using technology and new insights to be first in the minds of your potential customers and clients.

Using Brain-based Marketing to Engineer Hard-to-Refuse Offers |

December 31st, 2009

Author: Dan Auito

Here are the most important points and benefits to using brain-based marketing.

Effective selling is based upon emotions and establishing the right first impression; again, emotion sells, logic justifies.

Take heart: The ability to move people is not inborn, its science and it can be learned. It’s proven that there is a universal biological basis to selling that when stimulated in the brain, triggers a buying signal and there is scientific proof to back this up.

Studies found that successful salespeople spent more time initially with prospects establishing a connection before making their requests; this is like giving people psychological air. It says you care and it’s based on emotion and your ability to pick up on their hopes, fears, wants, needs, expectations and current situations.

These studies noted that once an emotional connection was reached people were more eager to listen and became more receptive to the message that the salesperson wanted to deliver. Instead of persuasion think of it as Pre-suasion!

Start by being open first to knocking down natural barriers beforehand, by being authentic and working to establish emotional trust first; reciting facts, features, benefits and advantages does not excite emotional buying triggers. Even the greatest seeds won’t grow on rocks!

Realize that people are blinded by first impressions. In today’s economy, value is paramount, so establish yourself and your products and services upon the value proposition because cheap works against you.

In times of trouble, people trust brands, so always work to brand yourself and constantly work to build you brands recognition. Great brands are built on authenticity that delivers real value and solutions that truly pay off.

Always be working at simplifying your message while delivering the maximum impact. Meme’s are full messages delivered by a picture or a slogan; it is a self explanatory symbol that represents a complete idea that anyone can grasp instantly, i.e. picture the Nike swatch or jazzed up check mark which instantly conveys top line tennis shoes and cool style, etc. The Slogan: “Have you driven a —- lately” reminds you of Ford, Coke = The Real Thing.

The idea is to simplify your message and brand it to cut through the clutter and insecurities of your market. Look at what other companies are using and doing to get people to buy things, then alter those successful methods for your own benefit.

Don’t assume you know everything. Be willing to experiment. Big companies have a harder time doing this. Focus on your major benefits as small irrelevant things become distractions. Drive home your major points and push the emotionally triggered hot buttons for optimum results! Selling hope is one of the best emotional triggers.

Here are the factors responsible for the lack of success in many marketing messages?

Many conventional business owners are often found to be driven by numbers, reports and data which are left- brain activities that lead to emphasizing features, benefits, advantages and key points. These do not create feelings or trigger emotional responses.

We assume people are rational but quite often we find they make irrational decisions. Try not to discount feelings. Many CEO’s fail to make customers part of the process. They create things and then try to sell them. Better to get feedback early to create pleasurable experiences while creating things that people want to buy!

Make customers part of the process, give them a voice, keep them informed, get feedback that will help them to see your proposition as fair. Use surveys, ask questions and do the research to become the expert that people naturally agree with and default to in times of need.

Another point made based upon research is that written text based advertising doesn’t excite the brain and it also consumes 25% of our energy. Strong visuals work better, save brain energy and are more enjoyable to look at. Use more pictures, graphics (Meme’s) and video for optimum results.

Again: Decision making isn’t necessarily a linear process; research is proving that it is more likely a chemical response that is triggered emotionally not rationally , so focus on creating an emotionally anchored game plan that creates a pleasurable response or at the very least, one that alleviates fear!

Online Learning Fever |

December 28th, 2009

Author: Alen Lew

Nowadays, we are all infected by the “www. Fever”. Almost everything could be done with the use of a computer and a reliable internet connection. Anything you want is just a click away. And as of now, online learning is a big hit to many students conquering about four million of the total learning population in the world, not to mention the fact that this number is growing at a rate of 30% annually. Amazing isn’t it?
But what’s the buzz all about? Why do these students flock to this so-called online learning environment? Take a look at the reasons that follow:
First would be because the student can attend a lesson or a course perhaps, anytime and anywhere they wanted. It is very accessible; just make sure you have a computer and an internet connection ready in front of you and presto! You can start your classes while attending to your child, or go to work in the morning and attend to it during your free time, or maybe have fun travelling or do business while learning. Thus, you can also have access to course materials anytime you wanted. Online learning also enables student-centered teaching approaches and also increases student interaction and diversity of opinion. This also allows the students to be exposed to knowledge and new technological skills.
According to users, participation online is a bit less intimidating than in the classroom, and the instructors here are more approachable. It also promotes camaraderie and facilitates team learning. This allows for broad spectrum content and gives everyone a chance to contribute to the lessons. And because there are no geographic barriers, students can find a diversity of course material that is usually only available online.
To sum all of these up, it all goes down to accessibility, flexibility and quality. Tough reasons aren’t it? That’s why we cannot blame people who preferred e-learning rather than the “brick and mortar” institutions.

Being a young mother is hard work, especially when there is not a lot of support from the father or the rest of her family. The Scholarships for Moms program helps these women to get their college education so that they can provide better lives for their families. Sometimes moms are reluctant to go back to school even when aid is available, but it is worth it when the money does not have to be paid back.

Currently, the minimum wage in our country is $7.25 per hour. This means that those women who do not have a college education will most likely make no higher than that hourly wage, which cannot really provide a fair life for a household. It is time to make the decision that will change your life forever. Paying bills is a challenge for people making minimum wage, and there surely is not money left over for any extra entertainment or activities.

Sometimes young mothers work multiple minimum-wage jobs so that they can try to make ends meet, but end up being burned out and have no time and energy left for their kids. Their kids are frustrated as well because they miss their mom. Finding a higher-paying job also means more time at home with the family, which will make for a happier household all-around.

In addition to increasing quality time with your family, you will be able to do more things with them that you could not do before due to the lack of funding. Your children will be grateful for what you are providing and will thank you for it.

The scholarships out there will help young moms because it takes away the financial burden associated with going back to school. They just need to think about how great life can be once that college degree is earned. Scholarship amounts vary, but can be as much as $10,000. The funding generally covers educational expenses like tuition and books, but can also be used for other costs as well.

If going back to school sounds like something that appeals to you, be sure to find out what you’d like to do, and find out what you need to do to get you there. This will lead you in the right direction in obtaining details about available funding for school. There most likely is a career out there you have always thought about entering. Well now is the time to get started.
