Embroidery is an age old art form that has decorated clothing, bedding, and household goods for hundreds of years. Using colored threads to create patterns has dated back to the time of ancient Egypt, when women sewed metallic threads into clothing for decoration. The trend caught on with Babylonians, Phoenicians, and Hebrews, who all began incorporating embroidered pieces into their clothing.

The oldest embroidered piece in existence is the world famous Bayeux Tapestry, dating from approximately 1066. Although the piece is called a tapestry, it is actually as embroidered composition reaching an astounding 231 feet long. Recalling the Battle of Hastings, the piece still hangs in the town of Bayeux in the province of Normandy in France. This beautiful embroidered piece is though to have been created by over 100 noble women in the town and is speculated to take several years to complete.

European embroidery changed a great deal over the years, but became a highlight of fashion during the 18th Century in France. These elaborate embroidery designs-often made with metallic and silk threads-decorated everything from women’s dresses to men’s breeches. This style soon caught on in popularity with the rest of the continent and soon men, women, and children were wearing heavily embroidered fashion. The decoration also served as a symbol of status and wealth in addition to simply adding glitz and glamour to the garments.

Embroidery continued in popularity and soon became a right of passage for girls to be taught by their mothers the time tested stitches and often completed a lovely sampler to showcase the different stitches and techniques. These samplers were passed down for generations and have been sold at auction for phenomenal amounts. Another popular use of embroidery was to dress up homely clothing. Often, homespun cloth or poor quality purchased cloth was the most a family could afford to outfit the members, so the matron of the house embroidered the clothing to make the outfits look fancier.

The end of the 19th Century saw founding of embroidery shops where scores of women completed the delicate stitches by hand. The year 1880 saw the advent of the first embroidery machine, which further mechanized the embroidery shops and produced even more products. Switzerland soon became the forerunner in embroidery designs and technology, with the United States in second, as shops popped up in New York City and Chicago.

Although the times have changed, the embroidery stitches and techniques have remained the same. Technology has greatly advanced and left the 1880s embroidery machine in the dust. Today’s machines can replicate thousands of pattern by just a simple push of a button.

I started out as a stamper. I remember being amazed at how a line art drawing could produce such beautiful results. I started out simply stamping and coloring in and progressed to more advanced techniques.  And then I was introduced to Scrapbooking via a home party. But I was a stamper! How could I combine the two?

I began incorporating my rubberstamps into my scrapbooks and you can too. You can use rubberstamps as backgrounds, titles, decorative accents, decorative borders and any way you can think of. For me using rubberstamps in my scrapbooks provided an additional creative expression to pass down to my children. Of course, rubberstamp styles and techniques have changed over the years and even some stamps are available specifically for Scrapbooking. Here are a few ideas for incorporating rubberstamps into your scrapbooks:

* Stamps as backgrounds-Randomly stamp all over a sheet of 12×12 cardstock to create your own custom background combining color combinations to coordinate with your photos. Idea: stamp various leaves in beautiful fall colors randomly on a sheet of 12×12 cardstock. A perfect background for photos of your kids playing in the leaves!

* Stamps as titles-Many stamps would make great titles all by themselves. A stamp that says “Happy Easter” would make a perfect title for an Easter layout.

* Alpha stamps as titles-There are plenty of alphabet stamp sets in various fonts. Pick your favorite or two and stamp a title. Or simply stamp the first letter in a journaling block. Stamp the letters a little staggered for a fun look and then you don’t have to worry about stamping a straight line. Another idea is to stamp out the letters to compose the word or phrase you want and then punch out with decorative punches. Circles, squares, tags, flowers and other decorative punches for a whimsical touch to your pages.

* Stamps as decorative accents-stamps of children in Halloween costumes make a cute accent to your Halloween pages. Or how about a stamped snowman for the “playing in the snow” pages?

* Stamps as decorative borders-stamp around the page, along one side, as a border on a photo matt or journaling box. For example, on a baby page stamp baby theme images like a bottle, pacifier, teddy bear, etc. as your border.

If you have rubberstamps and have been wanting to incorporate them into your scrapbooks, I hope the above ideas will help get the creative juices flowing! When you get into model railroading, you quickly learn about model train scales. Every model train that is produced has a scale letter associated with it, such as: HO, O and so forth. The scale let’s you know how true to life it is and more importantly, the physical size of the train itself. The scale refers to the size in comparison with the real thing. For example, 1:220 means the real version of the model train is 220 times larger. If you are a newcomer to model trains, the amount of space will be the first factor in determining which scale to go with. For the hardcore model railroader, mixing scales is a great joy when space permits. Let’s take a look at some of the model train scales and minimum space requirements.

Z Scale trains are 1:220, which means they are very small. I call these “cute” trains and they are perfect for those with an extremely limited space. As with any scale, you can expand the layout as large as you want to go.

Next up is the N Scale, which is 1:160. N scale trains are semi-popular and are great if you want your focus to be on your layout and not the train itself. They are small as well, so you can fit these trains into minimal space.

HO Scale model trains are 1:87 and the most popular scale of model train with model railroaders. They offer a good level of detail and allow you to fit a nice size track into an average size space. I like HO scale trains because they blend in great with any type scenery and you get a good balance as a result.

The O Scales, my favorite, are 1:48 and very popular as well. Lionel has been making great O scale model trains for many decades. These model trains are larger and require a good amount of space for a proper layout. It is possible to setup a small oval track in about a 5-foot by 5-foot area. Although the track will seem small because of the train’s size, it is better than nothing. If your layout is smaller, the O scale train will dominate the view.

There are a couple other scales, such as S and G, but these are the main ones I choose to discuss in this article. Only you can decide which scale is right for you. Some, with limited space, prefer the O scale model trains, even though they dominate the layout, because of their detail and size. O scale trains are “meatier” and are really great for pacifying the children.

All trains have a variance in quality so one scale is not necessarily more expensive than another. Although, I have found O scale model life to be a little bit pricier. You really can’t go wrong with model railroading. It is highly rewarding and wholesome. In the end, you might find yourself collecting model trains across the entire scale spectrum. Get out there and ride the rails!
